i was at the dealership think i should change my oil every 5k miles.
however, it turns out that it's every 10k miles (no wonder they offer me free oil change for life).
anyway, how often do you change yours?

Re: poll: how often do you change your jetta vr6 engine oil? (ultimaniac)

Every 5k. Though I think I should start changing it every 3k because of the aggressive nature in my driving. Also, I have the 1.8T, not sure if the service for oil changes are the same.

Every 5,000 miles is fine with synthetic oil, especially Mobil 1 http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

i guess i should do mine at least every 5k then.
i know vw has confidence in its cars, but it's just too long, the oil is getting dirty and going through chemical changes.
thanks for the all the votes.

To be safe, you should follow the maintenance booklet and get it changed every 10k miles, no matter if you use synthetic or petroleum. More frequently than 5k miles for petrol oil and 7.5k miles for synthetic is a waste of money and bad for the environment. With the VR6, you don't need to change your oil as frequently because you don't have a turbo. The oil is not under much stress.

Exactly. Do you ever see car manufacturers (who have a financial stake in making sure their engines never need repair before the powertrain warranties run out) recommend that you change your oil every 3,000 miles? Never (at least not any of the German companies). If there was even the slightest chance you would hurt your engine by changing your oil at the intervals specified by the maintenance booklet, the booklet would be changed, and whoever suggested such an interval in the first place would be shot. In fact, I'm sure they build in a big safety margin into the suggested interval.

A lot of the TDI guys do oil analysis to check if they need changes... and while it can be almost as expensive as an oil change, it gives a good idea of how often you should be changing your oil. Most of the guys found that a 10K interval (for a TDI with quality synthetic) is no problem at all. You guys should look into the results for 1.8T's/VR6's. I can't imagine changing mine every 3K. Actually, I bought a supplementary filter that should let me extend it to 15K/20K without problems.
