Re: Poly steering rack bushing? (16v)

I did this on my '81 Caddy about 5-6 years ago, although was done at the same time as poly suspension bushings, so I can't comment on the difference just from the rack bushings. I do know my old rubber ones fell apart as I removed them.

I ordered them from JC Whitney. My rack was rattling and it most likely can't hurt anything for $10. The only place I wouldn't use poly is where things twist like suspension. It tends to bind a lot sooner than standard rubber and may actually give you less travel due to the binding.

did you feel anything thru the wheel? more 'on spot' wheel to tire direction? When I saw my bushings last week with the car in the air I was astonished that I had any feel for the road..... they are junk
the new bushings are going in tomorrow so I was wondering what to expect

Doug,
I put a set of these in the race car, and they made the front end feel 'tighter' on turn-in. I'll be adding some 1/2 spacers to move the rack forward a bit for next year. Gotta make some 'sleeve nuts' though. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Yes, it was a huge improvement in replacing all the bushings, more solid handling, did not waver in the turns, just held the line you chose. I just can't comment on what the rack bushings alone will do, since I replaced everything at once.
