Porsche Boxster (non-'s'), what's your take?

Just wanted to hear everyone's take on the car. I've never really had any appreciation for it till I drove it in Gran Turismo 3

Now i'm curious!

i have about a dozen friends with Boxsters. every single one of them loves the car a lot. there is a popular misconception that they are not fast. as has been said by mor than one Boxster owner:
"if you don't think this car is fast... then you just admitted that you don't know how to drive it."
that said, if i had $50,000, i'd take a Boxster S over just about any other new car on the market today. they are easy to drive at the limit, and they have more than enough power for canyon carving, or back-country jaunts.
other than the 996 GT2 and 996TT, the Boxster S is my fave new Porsche.

RUF 3400S is pretty much my ultimate car. It's a Boxster with the 996 3.4l engine and all the goodness RUF puts in their car. So yummy.

I couldn't afford the $1000 oil changes... but otherwise a nice ride.. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Porsche Boxster (Rob)

the boxster is an awesome car in and out. I was so torn between it and the RX8. I went with the RX8, and put a deposit down.... Hmmm, maybe before 2003 i can get a boxster for a few months...
Re: Porsche Boxster (non-'s'), what's your take? (fahrfrumlosin)

Boxster 2.7 is definitely not slow. There are plenty of torque available through the rev range. Of course the S is simply amazing in terms of performance.

Re: Porsche Boxster (A4Jetta)

I wouldn't kick a base Boxster out of bed....

Hey, if I was in a situation to buy a Boxster and I couldn't afford the S, I would still be a very happy man. While the performance may not be up to the standards of some in the press, or even on this site, nothing I have seen or read about it makes me believe I'd be disappointed. My desire for a Boxster has less to do with horsepower than some of the other strong points of that car. From the numbers I've read about, give me your tired, poor, underperforming Boxsters.

Run to your local newsstand and buy the current issue of Excellence. There's a very good article in there compairing the Boxter and the Boxster S.
Also, a few months ago Excellence did a "Market Update" on the Boxster, so maybe you should pick up that issue too. Their Market Updates are pretty informative.
Actually, Excellence is doing a long term Boxster (base, non-s) project car, so any recent or near-future issues should be of interest to you.

Unless you're circulation director for Excellence and are trying to drive up sales, can you give us an overview of what they said?
Re: Porsche Boxster

seriously though aside from the fact that the boxster looks great and carries the Porsche aura how does it rate against say a well modified GTI with 260 crank HP and lot sof suspension mods?
I know the boxster has rear wheel drive and some other goodies but seriously when I saw some guys autox this bad boy I was not at all impressed. THey may have been inexperienced drivers or not pushed their car but the miatas and type rs were cleaning the floor with the boxsters....

the Boxster is FAST, but you need a competent driver to really make it shine. they simply own the road when it gets twisty. if you are looking for a dragster... don't buy a Porsche.

Re: Porsche Boxster (Obin Robinson)

the boxster was a great concept car that porsche was able to grab a new market with...but for the same money, id buy a 1996 993S...much better looking, and they dont have those horrible headlights!

for what it's worth.. if it's just horsepower and dollars.. there has NEVER been a Porsche made with the dollar/horsepower and performance ratio of the 944 turbo. anyone that tells you otherwise is lying. for $40,000 you could get a 944 turbo in the neighbourhood of 450-500+ daily driver Hp (and maintain the interior and 50/50 distribution and unbeatable handling).
but... the 944 turbo is not new, and if you want "new" or "still under warranty" then a Boxster is a great porsche to get.

Re: Porsche Boxster (Obin Robinson)

I agree that the 944 is soooooo cool It has always been my favorite porsche...consequently the price tag on these used is still very high because it is such a good stock racer....
but seriously though how does an average porsche boxster driver fare against a decent vw driver in a well modified but still only 260 HP gti?

I'll read it again when I get home (at work now) and I'll post a summary. I'll try to dig up the Market Update issue too.
I don't work for Excellence, but I enjoy reading it more than just about any other car rag. They have competent writing and a focus that is narrow enough to allow them to pack a lot of useful info into every issue. And I don't even own a Porsche, but I hope to some day!

you be the judge:

that's my Scirocco interior.

they weren't pressing it, but if they really were they'd lose me. i am about 75hp down, but also 800lbs lighter.
enjoy the pics!

Re: Porsche Boxster (Obin Robinson)

but that is not a boxster of course that would destroy a GTI only mildly modded.
ok I saw the boxster...was it a boxster s?
also what HP and weight are you running?
was he losing you in the straight aways or was it in the curves?
what kind of suspension do you have?
gearing can also play a big role....
