porting project needs your help

1333 Views 37 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  ANT THE KNEE
i have been wanting to port my turbo/manifold for a wile, and i'm just about ready w/ the $$$ and time to do it. the guy who does porting (DSM guy)wanted me to do a little research before we get started. he said to do a full porting, he would want to do the 1: turbo 2: maifold 3:turbo elbow. i'm pretty sure that i'm calling #3 the wrong thing but i'll throw it out there for some corrections. i guess the first thing i need is a diagram of the relaited area(kinda like the dealer parts screen). also, are there any other turbo to manifold gaskets out there that are just a tad bigger than stock? this would be helpfull when everything is opened up and the stock gasket is smaller than now needed. i know that i'm not really expressing my thoughts 100% clear, but i'll clearify as i go along.any pics of the turbo's would be greatly appreciated also, along w/ removal times or anything that you may think will help.
thank you all and i hope that this will be the beginning of the monster stock turbo

oohhh yea also, when i was at the dealer trying to get an idea of ow much a stock manifold was($260) there were 2 diff part #'s. one was for the german made 1.8's and the other was for brazil 1.8's. what's up with that?

Sounds almost like your buying parts for an old beetle.

i'm not sure what you mean? and i know that you have experienced alot w/ the 1.8t,why no help, suggestions, pointers? i'm not new around here, just looking for a cheaper alternative to buying a turbo. the k04 just doesn't seem worth it to me(AWW)

There are 2 parts sources for old Beetle, MExico and Germany, Mexican parts aren't as good as their German counterparts. Have you tried a Bentley manual, tons of usefull photographs in that thing. I won't be home till tomorrow to look in mine but if they have some I'll e-mail them to you. Also I'm also looking to have this done along with some other minor thing,s do you mind me asking what the guy is charging you? Also I didn't even know they made Brazilian 1.8t's. According to my window sticker my engine was assembled in Germany and the green machine was built in Brazil.

mike your right, our green machine engines were built in germany and installed in brazil. as for pricing, im not sure, not too expensive, i'm kinda tight w/ the guy. i haven't looked at the bently yet, (dumb ass i am) but i'm sure that there can be some missing info peole around here can fill in
.
I'll let you know as things progress, i'm waiting on info and gaskets before i take this on

Re: porting project needs your help (ANT THE KNEE)

what he can do for you is do some port matching - if you were to overlay the head-exhaust gasket on the exhaust manifold - he can take some materail off there to match the size (you'd want to make sure that the head ports are also large enough) I'm sorry that I don't have the pictures of my stock one next to the ported one I got from Billy - as soon as I "develop" them (dump them from CF onto laptop) I'll post them
Re: porting project needs your help (ANT THE KNEE)

Dumb question would this be the same as "extrude honed"? In my miniscule amount of turbo knowledge that means smoothing the insides of the castings on the Turbo and related parts? I'm learning as I go here, been paying more attention to my old VR6 than turbo's for the last couple years

ill let you know as soon as mine gets done, i was quoted 75 to get it extrude honed, and drilled for my egt probe. that includes removal from my car.
Re: porting project needs your help (ANT THE KNEE)

Ant, I can bring my stock turbo to Atco, so that you can look at it, take pictures, and plan things( met couple of weeks ago at Atco) E-mail me, I am sure we can arrange sth.

is that a friends and family price?and can i get that done for the same price?
i was also strongly considering coating the manifold, trying to keep underhood temps low. i hear that it only cost about $75. anyone know from experience?
Stan:sounds great, i'd love to get a better look, however i'm gonna stray from the track for a bit. I can't show my face untill 13's are there.

Re: porting project needs your help (ANT THE KNEE)

update: i picked up a manifold to have ported, which looks sick by the way, alot bigger, nice knife edging. I'm going to have the manifold tapped for an EGT also, was wondering where everyone is doing there's? wile it's off i'm tryig to get it jet coated. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif . going to wait till i get it back to pull the turbo and have it ported. that way there will be minimum down time. i have picks of the stock before porting, i'll post when i have after shots.
anyone out there have tips on removal of the turbo/manifold. time frame anything.mike p says 5-6 hrs i think that's sick, what did it take you?

Knife egding the manifold?

where the turbo bolts on to the manifold, there is a "pinch" that directs the flow towards the turbo. it was taken out alot and made nice and smooth. i am hoping that some one here can post pics for me when it's done , i don't have a hoster.
anyone out there with info on my questions. glad to see some love around here though. i was thinking that no one wanted to help. atleast you guys are watching
