i am wondering if the same tint spraypaint that we use for our side markers could be used to paint the tails... a little sanding here and there, and some spray tint, then clear coat.... has anyone tried this, if not, do you think it would work?

Re: Possible ghetto smoked tails? (boraIV)

Funny you should ask
This is BoraBill's car.

He is currently selling the tails (returning the car to stock for trade-in).
This is the information he listed about them
quote:

I have tinted rear tailights (stock core) and I want to sell these for cheap! $20 + exchange for stock taillights! These were tinted by wetworksgarage for $100 and they are in very good condition. These will fit any mkIV Jetta...cool mod! Want local buyer and will drive to destination in OC/LA no charge.

See this link if you're interested in buying them

Re: Possible ghetto smoked tails? (boraIV)

Well, I know some people did not like these, but I had done this after I tinted my orange lens. I ended up removing it after I was washing it and the buffer took part of the tint off. Otherwise it was not bad. I figured I would just get the smoked ones now.
For those curious, if it was legal. I did have 2 cops at different times behind me in the day through town and never got pulled over.
Parked

Brakes on in the day

Brakes on at night

I did the 5 brake light mod as well and turned the rear fogs into brake lights.
Hope this helps

Re: Possible ghetto smoked tails? (steez)

DONT USE SPRAY TINT!!! it WILL wear and chip off eventually. The best way to tint any kind of lense be it blinker or tail is to dye it. i have done this on many of my cars and it works the best. and best of all it is permanant. heres what to do:
go to your local department store (Wal-Mart) and pick up some boxes of black RIT dye. these are a dollar or so each. this is the same stuff that you can dye clothes with.
now take your tails or whatever and find a stock pot that will be big enough to fully emerge them in water.
next fill the pot with enough water to cover the lights completly and pour in the dye. mix it up and place on the stove to a simmer. you don't want this to boil or you will have a stained stove.
alright now submerge the light completly and start the timer. you are going to want to time these so you know how long to do the other one. Typically the tails take 30min-1hour. and blinkers take 10'ish minutes. or to your liking.
these will now be dyed inside and out, and the dye will have penetrated into the plastic so it dosent wear off.
finally get some wax and buff the suckers out. they will be a bit hazy, but it will buff out. BE sure that when you place the lights in to put them face up so as not to melt the lense.
again this is a permant mod, and it will not wear off.
Oh yeah, don't go to dark or your orange blinkers will blink red.
