I am about to buy a 2002 VW GTI from a dealer a long way away. I got a VIN number by phone and it doesn't quite check out. The car is definitely an automatic trans. but the VIN comes up as a GTI 337 which I thought was a manual 6 speed.

your correct. 337's and 20th ani's are 6 speed. Sounds fishy.

I ran a VIN decoder and it appears that the 1J in the sequence means Golf Mk 4, the "3" in the sequence is not specified and the rest is about the year, plant, and serial #. Does the "3" definitely mean 337 trim?

Its kind of funny, alot of 2002 gti's come up on vin searches and insurance policies as golf/gti 337. I have seen it many times before

My GLI comes up as a GLS and the dealership I bought it from gave me a manual from a VR6 Jetta. Could just be the dealership gave you some faulty info.

It's a pretty common thing... Happened to me when I was shopping for my car too. Plus I've read about it several times on here.

I think the dealer is mis-informed. that vin comes up as a indigo blue gti. with a nameplate set" GTI
1.8t" no special badges.

is this car even silver?

VW screwed up the vins. A lot of non 337s run as 337 vins where as my 337s vin runs as a GLS.

True vw messed up my old 02 gti was a 337 on my insurance

and my curent car a 337 is a GLS on my insurance also my project 337 comes up GLS

since 337's were never "numbered" by VWOA they dont have special vin's like 20th's do
its not uncommon

My car showed as 337 (still does) when I bought it new. Just 2 months before the 337 came out.
I have an 02 indigo.
I would say its a common problem as well.
