Alright. I was bored in the car today just thinking about power vs weight. Well. If anybody that knows me that reads this you know that I don't care about looks one bit. So..... with this in mind....... I came up with some small ideas for a VR6 into a what scenario.
1. Staying VW, we slap a VR6 into a air cooled bug some how. I dunno how but it would be possible (with money that is). Any ways. I don't know of any lighter VW chasis other than the bug.

2. We go non VW. So.......... we start thinking.......... what is the lightest car you can think of that is actually a car (no golf carts or anything of the sort
) ............................................................................................................................. first thing that popped into my mind was............... a GEO METRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woohooo. Now. how do you put one in there. There isn't enough room up front so.......... it goes in the rear unless you wanna sit in the back seat and push the firewall back.
that would be funny.

now those are the two lightest/smallest VW and non VW cars I could think of that are readily available in the US. I just wish someday I could do a butcher job like this. It would be great to go to the track or drive around town with a Geo Metro that has a low growl and a 6 cylinder in it. i don't know if the geo could support the weight of the engine though, I am pretty sure it could but maybe not. I mean crap, the lowest priced car was a geo metro because some came with a crappy 3 cylinder engine!!!!!!! putting a vr6 in there doubles the stupid 3.
i mean jeez. what times would you be pushing with a stock vr6 in a metro. any ways. this is just for leisure talk. hope yall talk about it more.

If I could some how find a donar car and buy it then I would do this, but then again, i don't have money so that is out of the picture. I need a job.

I know some HB and CRX hondas run 11's on all motor with only around 151 hp. THose cars are striped down to 1700-2000 lbs. or less. Now think of it in terms of ur metro. 170 hp and a light car. How light r those things?

here we go. just did a quick search on da net and came up with this.
Base prices: $8395--9795
Vehicle type: front-engine, front-drive; 3- or 4-door 4-passenger coupe or sedan
Interior volume F/R/cargo (cu ft): 47/33--34/8--10
Wheelbase 93.1 in
Track, F/R 54.5/53.5 in
Length/Width 149.4-164.2 in/62.6 in
Height 55.5-55.7 in
Curb weight 1750-1950 lb
Fuel-tank capacity/EPA city mpg 10.6 gal/29-43
Standard passive restraint driver and passenger airbags
POWERTRAIN
1.0-liter SOHC 3-in-line, 55 hp; 1.3-liter SOHC 4-in-line, 70 hp; 5-sp man, 3-sp auto
SUSPENSION
F ind, struts, coil springs, anti-roll bar
R ind, trailing arms, coil springs, anti-roll bar
BRAKES
F/R disc/drum
ABS optional
now. from theis I saw. We take off about 200 pounds for all the interior, extra, seat, rear seats, and other crap. just to be safe we say 200. Do you think we could get more out of this already light car??
1750-200=1550
alright. not bad. now. how much do you guys think that little 3 cylinder engine weighs with tranny of course out of that 1550 pounds that are left??
on the side note of engines. how much does the vr6 engine and tranny weigh??
lets just say the weight is up to 2k. so we have a vr6 car with 2k weight?? does that sound about right. so ya add me in there and we get 2180 total weight roughly of course.
If we wanted to go better on weight reduction we could actaully spend more money on the mofo and get a Carbon fiber hood, rear hatch, plexi all around, and then add all the weight back into the car and add a roll cage.
hehe. so we are back to 2180 with driver.
woohoo. fun stuff. I know my numbers are off so some one correct me, please. maybe I will start a geo metro weight reduction and then buy a vr6 motor slowly from scratch. that would be cool. I just don't know where to mount it. I am thinking mounting the engine in the rear, that way we can get rear wheel drive.
Oh ya. who would expect that. any ways. just tossing around ideas. peace.

ok. so i started with ebay now. this is just getting hilarious. smoked out fronts and rears for a geo metro. lol check this out.

maybe that one isn't that funny but here. if this guy is saying you can get 20 more HP outta the 3 cylinder then uaaa wow. 50 percent gains from the egnie with such a cheap price and little ecu upgrade. me likey NOT

any ways. enough bashing. I am looking for a cheap donor car. maybe i will go to the local papers instead of ebay.

well. here goes another one of my stupid information adventure. ya. i get a bunch of info for a project and never do it. Gotta love it. any ways. i just joined a geo metro/suzuki swift forums and started asking which model/generation of metro/swift is the lightest. yes the suzuki swift and metro are the same cars. I didn't know either.
any ways. they got some funky talk going on over there with 1.6l over bores, turbos in their swifts and stuff and some people doing 15s with their 1.6l overbores and such. weird if ya ask me. any ways. i also joined a yahoo groups metro thing and asked the same question there. maybe I will get a reply soon.
me likey, VW powered american car.
hehe sure the handeling wouldn't be there but hey, most people only talk about going straight any ways.
oh ya. one thing that would be cool would be to keep the metro/swift as stock looking as possible. crappy looking exhaust, maybe a ****ty paint job or just keep it as i get it, maybe mix matched colored fenders and doors
like the ricers do, and then of course tint the windows out so that they couldn't see either the VR6 in the rear or else the firewall pushed back.
any ways. this is just my imagination talking. talk to yall later. peace.

Since Ford already ran a VR6 in some of its european cars I say throw one in a Festiva, it is super light and I think it would be cool. I have thought about this a few times before. they already did the Festiva Shogun so it wouldn't be too far off to do. You can throw a Ford valve cover on it and no one would ever know it was a VW engine until they looked really close.

You know, a Rabbit and a Metro are about the same size and weight. But, it's been done.
Also, I've seen a VR6 in a Bug. It was alot of work, but it was done right.
Just my $.02
