Have to replace my GTI VR6's (95) pump which is on order. What brand/type of fluid is ok to use. The stuff at the stealership is $$$, saw that Halvoline is compatible is there any others that can be purchased outside of the dealership? Also how much (quantity) to refill the system?

Re: Power Steering Fluid (stiminski)

Make sure the power steering fluid is a mineral oil based fluid.
Adding convential domestic power steering fluid will have the pump fail prematurely.

dealer gave me the shop bottle and let me top mine off for free! They only had the big bottle and I only needed a pint or so.

Power steering fluid = ATF

No!

Maybe in a Ford or GM, but VW uses a mineral hydraulic oil.
Using ATF will likely damage the system.

Yes, it will destroy the pump as noted before.
DO NOT USE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF) in VW power steeting pumps!

bull**** using atf won't hurt the pump, as long as you change it within a few days. I was merely suggesting a simple alternative when your stuck without PSF. I would not recommend this for extended periods of time.
