I have a quick question my power sterring pump went out and I really dont feel teh need for power steering so i just took off the belt do need to change the steering rack now to keep the rack from being damaged from not running a power steering pump and more is the rack even effected from not having the pump and anymore ? Driving a power steering rack without the pump is a b*itch. My pump went out too, it was nasty. I would recommend finding a non-power rack at a salvage if you want to permanently remove it.
Nice spelling in the sig, is that on purpose?

It is possible to drive without a pump but very hard. You would be better off by taking off the pump and draining out all of the fluid. Unhook the lines and turn the wheel lock to lock to make sure all fluid is out of the system. You still might find that you want a non-power rack.

Taking the rack out is a bitch. Its much easier to find a pump at the yard than a rack, and you dont have to take the rear subframe out to change them. Just unbolt it. Just make a post that you want to buy a decent pump for $25 and somebody will chime in because they have that one thats just sitting in their garage...

ok but is not having a pump on my p/s rack gonna mess it up ? does any body know did any of the jettas in 91 come w/o p/s if so were they the same rack or not ?

baseline models would come w/o p/s and thus you could use one of those. FYI, any non p/s steering rack from an A2 would work.

does vw make diffrent racks for there base lines or just add the pump cause i know of other companies that use the same rack just add the pump and stuff i don t know about vw thats why i ask

i think its a seperate rack altogether...i dont have p/s so i dont really know

Yeah, thy're two different racks. Takes for full turns end to end on manual, and something like 2.5 with p/s

I was just parking tonight for a concert and it was damn tight....the manual rack was really starting to get on my nerves once I'd turned the wheel about 16 times
