POWER WINDOW FAILURES- HOW MANY VORTEXERS?

640 Views 21 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Wholsea
I put my rear windows down to clean off some moisture on a chilly morning last week and apparently it caused the windows to fall out of the faulty plastic support bracket in the door...hence an off-track window. Now, I can't use the window until I get my buddy mechanic gets the "solution" piece from vw.
I was just wondering if you guys have had the same problems and if so, what are the dealerships telling you. They told my buddy these things are breaking by the 1000's and they can't keep up...recall anyone?

reason #1857 for manual windows, besides if you fall in a river and need to get out........
sorry dude, the more components in a system, the more than can go wrong
Re: POWER WINDOW FAILURES- HOW MANY VORTEXERS? (WOLF 99)

Re: POWER WINDOW FAILURES- HOW MANY VORTEXERS? (TREKinFlorida)

Hopefully being from FALL RIVER doesn't mean anything. Seriously considering converting to manual.
Re: POWER WINDOW FAILURES- HOW MANY VORTEXERS? (WOLF 99)

please don't share why ur arm was tired.
No seriously though...I just called another local vw shop, and they honestly told me they have been having "some" problems with this stuff. Usually, they try and make it look like your the only case. Looks like this is a known prob...why doesn't VW make good on it?
Re: POWER WINDOW FAILURES- HOW MANY VORTEXERS? (WOLF 99)

My drivers door window regulator went out a few months ago..it was about 32 degrees that night, and it was about 4" open...needless to say, i bought a new regulator and replaced it the next day

After reading about all the window failures, I now keep some clear plastic sheet and tape in my trunk.

Ive got that same problem but mine never fell off the plastic thing. I honestly never heard of that, I dont think it is as known as it may seem.
Re: POWER WINDOW FAILURES- HOW MANY VORTEXERS? (ILJM-VR6)

I had to do the right rear window.....it seems very common in Mk3's.....

I have heard lots of people who have suffered from this and it always seems to happen on the coldest day of the year.
The problem stems from the fact that there is a metal wire that is pulling around a plastic wheel. The plastic wears out pretty easily from the metal wire rubbung against it thus-then plastic wheel breaks and the windows no longer functions correctly
I have heard that this is also a problem on mk4's so its not just us.
it would probably be a 50 cent part to change in the production line from VW, but it cost us around $50. go figure why it hasn't been corrected in at least the newer models.

thanks for all the input guys. My buddy also told me it was like a .50 cent part. Instead of VW servicing the customers because of their design flaw, they make the victim customer buy the entire assembly...that is total Cowsh!t. I think they should do a recall (fix it free), or at least sell the cheap little part that is needed...but this time the part should be made with with a better material.
Am I being anal or do you guys think it is a valid gripe?

I hope whoever made that design doesn't have a job now. what a D!cK.

quote:

Im a victim also. both of my rear windows are able to roll down, but they wont roll up. i have to get out of the car and push them up before i go inside. they roll down about an inch or so while im driving and i have to lean back and push them back up. how expensive of a repair are these window regulators?

I tried to push mine back up, and my friend and I together couldnt budge it...we were lifting the side of the car we were pulling that hard (not off the ground, but it was tilting)
i worked there at the time, so i got a discount and a drivers door one for a jetta cost me $90, but IIRC the normal price was like $130
My friend and I did it, it took a few hours, but wasn't too hard, I'm sure they would jack you for quite a bit on labor for something like that. If you plan to do it yourself there is a website with instructions floating around, let me know if you have any ?s
You will know it is going to crap out within a few months when you start to see a line of grease on your window when you put it down and then put it back up.

Use the switch to "roll" the window up, you will hear the motor run, but the window won't go up, once it reaches the end of the track, you can then slide the window up.
you need to get a new window regulator... They are about $120 from the dealer, or like $60 wholesale (If you can find a dealer who can hook you up :-D ) http://www.vwparts.com has them too...
The install is easy as anything
Here is the tutorial I did, step by step, including pictures: http://www.ohiovw.com/tutorial/regulator/default.asp
