problem with 2nd gear

464 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  RVs021.8T
i had a neuspeed short shifter installed in my mkIV Jetta VR6 a while back. about 8-10 months. when i first started using it i was always grinding 2nd gear whenever i was racing or just felt like flooring the car. i talked to the people who put it in and they said that it was ok to grind the gear and that it is normal for this shifter to do that. but this weekend i think i might have messed something up. i went racing this weekend and now whenever i try to put the car into 2nd if the rpm's aren't all the way down to about idle it will grind. so my question is: is it my short shifter or could it be something more serious (ie: transmission, clutch, flywheel)????

Re: problem with 2nd gear (greensleeper)

It's the shortshifter and now your 2nd gear synchronizers.
Your going to have a realy hard time getting that fixed under warranty.
Re: problem with 2nd gear (greensleeper)

The grinding is definitely in the tranny. If you intend to bring it in to the dealer for warranty service make sure you restore the shifter to stock or they'll void your warranty and blame it on the Neuspeed.
BTW grinding gears is NEVER "normal" on a tranny with synchros. What idiot told you that.
Re: problem with 2nd gear (greensleeper)

Do a search on 2nd gear grind and you'll see an assortment of posts regoarding this problem. I don't have a short shift kit and I'm starting to experience 2nd gear grind when shifting at RPM's over 5000. I'm not sure if the longer I go, the worse it will get. I only have 22K miles on the car. There's a post out there that mentions the problem being the 2nd gear syncro and the parts that were replaced to fix it. I don't have the link, but with the search you hould find it easily.
Re: problem with 2nd gear (EPilot)

Cant be worse than my problem, I went to the shop today to get my hf cat put on, and the 2nd o2 sensor would not fit. So the mechanic decided to bang some room in between the sensor and the heat shield. Well after everything is put on and running and sounding good, I try to leave and my transmission wont move.

Not at all, only went into 3rd. Im freaking here, and the guy finally realizes that when he hit the shield with the hammer that he knocked the dent right into the shifter linkage and jammed it.

After about 30 minutes of playing with the shifter and trying to get the dent down a little, my gears are finally back to normal, except 2nd is still a little tough. I cant take it to the dealer because they will ask what happened and then I am screwed. So I am going to just try and work the dent out as best I can. It sucks.

Re: problem with 2nd gear (RVs021.8T)

my problem with taking it back to the dealership is that i have a couple of other mods that they dont approve of: intake,GIAC chip, exhaust, suspension, all 4 rotors crossdrilled, rims, anti-sway bar, and a couple of minor upgrades.
i dont see why the dealerships cant just let us have fun with our cars.
oh yeah and my car is a lease!!!
