problem with my VR6 (I know, it's been beaten to death already)

my car runs fine, but when trying to start it up, it often won't start without a little help from the gas pedal, and with or without tapping the gas pedal, when it does start up, it's starts up normal, then the RPM's drop (this is when the car dies sometimes if I don't give it a little gas), and then they return to normal. I believe there are other 6 owners who have had this prob. before, but I did a search and found nothing (big surprise there http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif ) Any help from the VR6 guru's out there would be great.
PS: I'm also looking for GOOD mechanic in my area who is familiar with the VR6 to fix this. I'm located in Southeastern Mass, if anyone knows of anybody, that would be of great help!!!! thanks! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: problem with my VR6 (vdubbed81)

have you tried injector cleaner?
It sometimes solves the problem ....
Re: problem with my VR6 (Guillaume)

it may have been "beaten to death" yes, but no answers (or at least, remotely concrete ones) were ever reached. So, it's still an open case, so to say.
I have tried fuel injector cleaner and water remove (both STP brand). It did seem to help at the time, but I think I'm back to where I was. So how much of this crap can you run through without ruining $200 worth of new o2 sensors? The bottles usually say 1 bottle/3-4000 miles.
I don't mind buying a lot of them, just don't want to murder my new o2's.
Re: problem with my VR6 (Frankenwagen)

when last time You replace fuel filter?
Re: problem with my VR6 (Fantomasz)

not sure about vdubbed81, but I did a new fuel filter.
This also allowed me to see what type of starting occured with no fuel in the lines (as it drained out when removing filter).
It was a totally different type of no-start situation. With no fuel, it would just crank and crank...........
mine actually starts, it just dies immediately after doing so, start/die start/die ect.
Re: problem with my VR6 (Frankenwagen)

hmm, is your MAF sensor ok? when my MAF broke(the little filiment inside the tube actually broke off) on my old VR6, it would start, die, start, die, start with gas and idle like sheet between 400 rpms and 1000 rpms. Check your plugs, wires, coilpack, and all the rest of the sensors. If that doesn't work, take it to the dealer and cough up some money and get it fixed(hopefully)

I have the EXACT same problem your having.. mines a 95 vr6 that was swapped into a 95 golf gl, but i doubt it has anything to do with the swapping. if you find anything out let me know! (i'll do the same)

Re: problem with my VR6 (Slayer)

hmmm... never replaced the fuel filter (50k on the car), never used injector cleaner either. I will try the injector cleaner, and I was planning on doing the pump anyway, just waiting for it to get warmer. However, the day my car started doing this (it was a sudden thing, earlier in the day it was, fine than after putting in my stereo it wasn't), I originally placed the blame on something electrical because of the stereo install, but I know my brother was fiddling under the hood too, and he won't admit it but I think he may have broken the MAF Sensor (I hope), I as of right now I"m going to try that first and see what happens.
PS: I believe I know where and what the MAF sensor is but can someone just re-affirm it for me? (and perhaps what a broken or non-broken one would look like) thanks!!! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Also, is it possible that while trying to do the stereo, it blew or burned out one of the sensors seeing how it's all electrical? (I know I'm going out on a limb here)

Re: problem with my VR6 (vdubbed81)

alright, the MAF is the tube between the airbox and the tube going to the throttle body. The housing that the MAF is about 5-6" and has a wire going to it. just disconnect the fasteners holding the airbox onto it and loose the clamp that is on the back of the housing, and it should come off with a little wiggling. Look inside and see if there is a little filiment sticking out into the tube, if there isn't one, then it is broke, or if it is wobbley(it would bend over to a particular side when you turned the tube in your hand) it is also broken. also check and make sure that all the sensor around the throttle body area are plugged in and tight
