(sigh)
It must be so nice to have money, and a garage, and a MIG welder, and...
*sniffle*
Re: Project update (bk1GTI)

Nice! Can't wait to see more progress pics. I'm gonna be tearing down a Caddy and my GTI sometime in the future.
Where'd ya get the new gas tank?
Tim
Re: Project update (vwrabbit)

looks like mine did a few weeks ago.... those rust hole look small until you start poking around.
I welded patch pieces in my floor and primed and sealed them. After that, I got a two part bedliner spray and a shultz gun and did the rocker panels and the floor... Should hold up real good now..

Do some POR 15 on the joints and go over it with this:

Designed to seal sheet metal overlap joints that have been spotwelded, riveted, or bolted together. Can be painted when dry. Remains flexible and resistes oil, fuel and other automotive fluids.
I used this in all the areas that had cancer on my caddy. The best way to put it on is with some THICK rubber gloves.. I used latex and it ate through them in about 5 minutes
. I smeard the stuff all over the entire floor befor putting down the bedliner spray...

above is a link to more info about it.
A lot of guys on vortex swear by POR 15
P.S. The dealer can still get the battery tray. I put a new one in my old rabbit... Kind of a pain in the ass to weld, but it sure looks nice with a new one.

Re: Project update (Big CADDY)

POR-15 is the shizat. Can't bust it with a sledge hammer.
Re: Project update (67vwbug)

Big CADDY thanks for the info!!! I just started to look for a coaitng for the metal and that stuff looks perfect! Are you going to carpet over the bed lining? Does the bed lining offer any sound deading?
I found the gas tank at rockauto.com
Re: Project update (bk1GTI)

yes, it does offer some sound deadening...
Yes, I'm gonna carpet over it. I would love to put about 6 more coats on
for sound deadening.
aaah Nice site . How was the fit on that new gas tank?

Re: Project update (bk1GTI)

Hey bk1,
Where'd you find that gas tank? I'm in dire need of a tank and I haven't convinced myself to pay $110 for a "used" tank that might be just as much a POS as my current tank.
Your project, your setup (garage, etc), and your site rule!

Re: Project update (bk1GTI)

hey, any sugestions of how to remove that carpet glue.
Re: Project update (bk1GTI)

BK1GTI... I have been trying to get ahold of someone who has ordered a tank from rockauto... Is the inside of the tank similar to the stock one??? meaning is there a baffle?? When I ordered the wrong tank from rockauto
(my fault) I wanted a description of the right one and they could only tell me that it had what looked like a soup bowl int the middle... kind of a weak descripion I.M.O.
Pleas help me out here??? http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Project update (baywindow)

ahhh, the carpet glue.... yuck yuck and another yuck
Well, what I did was get out the old butane torch and put a little heat on it.. You probably would be safer if you used a heat gun... Rent one. The tar stuff comes right up with about 3 seconds worth of heat on it and using a chisel to just peal it away. I spent about 2 hours trying to do it with out heat... what a waste of time..
I bet I removed 50lbs of junk from my floor.
Have fun, wear gloves

Re: Project update (Big CADDY)

I will take a good look at the tank tonight and maybe post some more pics. I will see if it is baffled or not.
