Protecting stock alloys from winter salt

Are my VW stock alloy rims safe in a city where they salt the roads. I've thought about waxing them. Does this help?

Use some polymer based sealant on them.
Nu-Finish is reasonably priced and works well.
Would recommend you reapply every month during the salting time of the year.
