Puddle, INSIDE CAR

524 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  darkrocco
Well I got this huge puddle on the passengers side. Here is what I know, it develops when I don't drive the car, so it can't be from underneath, so thats about all i know. I am thinking it is coming from the fresh air intake in the middle, is there an easy way to get to check this, any quick suggestions? Living in vancouver is not good when you have a leak so........ Door seals look good. I installed mudflaps with screws could this have made some wierd hole somewhere?
TIA

Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (darkrocco)

Most likely it's coming from the windshield at the lower passenger side corner. It's pretty common, mine does too. Unless you have a leaky heater core, does it smell like coolant in there?
Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (A1Rocco)

fairly safe to say that it's the plastic covers inside (under) the door panels. Take off your door panel and have a look for yourself..there should be a clear plastic sheet glued to the metal of the door. I'd imagine it's either missing or torn. good Luck! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I have the same issue and was wonding if its the windshield passenger corner, would the dash be wet? Mine doesnt seem to be, but ive determined that waters running down from underneath the dash on the passenger side near the right corner.
Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (darkrocco)

I had the same problem in my 1984 Scirocco. It water the fresh air intake in the cowl area. the fresh air inlet bok had been removed once before (I assume to replace the blower motor..car has A/C) and when removing the box the seal had been compromised. I removed all the carpet and when it rained really good one day you coild see water coming from up under the dash and it would run down the indide of the firewall and collect on the passenger floor. Resealed the box and haven't had a problem since.
Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (4string)

Concerning the windshield leak, typically to see the water leaking in you have to remove the carpet on the side of foot well area just ahead of the front doors. Once it's off you can usualy see the water dripping down from above and in between the dash and the sheet metal on the side of the car. If you remove the dash you will see that the inside corner area of the winshield has a shape molded into the inner metal panels that forces the leaking water to run to the outside and down the inside metal panels of the car. That's a good thing. To fix either reseal the windshield with a new seal or let it dry out for several days and use some silicone around the outside of the window seal.
In this situation the dash does not usually get wet as the leak is behind it.
Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (scirocco16v)

Hmm, apparently my model doesn't have that plastic sheet. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Hehe will shoving a plastic bag in it fix the problem???? getting my door panel off is a menace!
Thanks

Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (darkrocco)

you can use a garbage bag to do it. Just duct tape it on all the way around...
Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (scirocco16v)

And I have a wet rug under the passengers seat, for some reason.
Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (Aw614)

that's super common...usually caused by leakey sunroofs or missing door card plastic as I stated above...my 16V had this problem from the sunroof...my buddy's '86 GTI with no sunroof leaked through the door panel.
Re: Puddle, INSIDE CAR (scirocco16v)

Well, found the leak, sort of, I took off my door panel, and yeah poured some water on down the window, and about half of it came inside. The only assumption I can make is that my weatherstripping needs replacing even though it looks perfect and is very snug. Hope fully this is it. Man the door panel does a lot of sound proofing!!! But if you want to lighten/strip your cars for racing, take off the door panels, they probably weigh like 30 lbs? The metal is even painted black
