Quest? Diff between GLI & GTI windshield.

What is the difference between a 92 Jetta GLI windshield and a 92 Golf GTI windshield. The part #'s at the dealer are different. The only thing that I can think of that is different is the rear view mirror and the seal around the glass. The Jetta has the rear view attached to the roof and hangs down. The golf has it attached to the windshield. The windshield on the Jetta has a seal that is very different from tthat of the Golf. Why??? I purchased a Jetta windshield and there is a seal bonded to the glass. For the golf you have to purchase it separatly for $15. I already have a Jetta windshield. Can I just trim the glued on seal and use it for the golf and then glue the mirror. Help.

i was told it has something to do with mexican VS german built cars. Yes the gaskets are diffrent, and yes the mounting for the rear mirror is too. The glass is not. I got one installed with new gasket for under $200 this summer.
