My friend is looking at 2001 GTi VR6 with 12k miles. They are asking 18000 for it. Is it too much?

Yes. 17k is more in teh ball park

If they're asking $18k offer $16.5k and negotiate it to the $17-17.5k range. I don't think $18k is outrageous so they may stick to their guns on the price. If they won't negotiate on price, try to get some extra's thrown in like a changer. Good luck.

It's an almost-new car for almost $5k less than a new one would cost.
Try to dicker and see what happens, but I don't find that to be an unfair price.

Sounds like a fair price.....I sold my 2000 for $17K with 25,000 miles. All depends on how desperate the seller is these still blue book at over $20,000..well last time I checked at least

That does not sound like a bad price to me, but always try to pay less money than you have to.
