I don't really know about volkswagens but my friend told me to ask this. His dad just gave him his mk2 gti with a dohc 16v engine. The markings in the door indicate that the car is an '87 but under the hood there are markings that say 1991. There are also markings that say 2.0 liter. Could this really be an engine from a '91? This gti also has dual round headlights which also looks different then other '87 golfs. Any help would be great

Re: question about mk2 gti engine swap (Reast)

Well, either the door or the hood could have been pulled from a junkyard. What's the official VIN? that tells you what year it "really" is. A 16v motor starts life as either a 1.8 with CIS-E, or a 2.0 with CIS-E Motronic. Motronic will have the diag code hookup thing in addition to different markings. Headlight upgrades are common and don't indicate a whole lot.
