Re: question about weight of rims (veedubpwr)

Chromium is a finish, not a construction material. Few quality rims come with chrome finishes, because the process of plating the wheel weakens it, which means you have to start with a bigger/stronger heavier wheel in the first place. Chrome was popular whan Grandad built his hot rod, because his wheels were made of steel and chrome kept them from corroding.
Most quality wheels are aluminum alloy with a clearcoat and/or powder paint finish. Cast aluminum, such as all VW OEM alloy wheels, is an adequate and reasonably cost-effective construction technique. It won't corrode if you take care of it, so there's no reason to chrome plate it unless you like that look. Better wheels are forged, which saves weight. The best are built in 2 or 3 pieces, which reportedly makes them stronger and allows construction to tighter tolerances. They are also quite expensive, and the $$$ spent on them might be overkill for a street VW. It's your dime, though.
