I just bought a 1987 1.8 16v gti. I have had 8v's all before and just recently got a corrado vr6. I bought the gti for a daily driver. The cars not in bad shape at all, its got 195,000 miles though, but i only paid $650
. Ok my question is the motor idles real rough when you start it up and even after you drive it for a while then come to a red light or something it will idle nice then all of the sudden get real rough, then idle nice again. Now it does have a rather big whole in the exhaust which i was thinking could be part of the prob, and i just ordered a techtonics exhaust. The engine also smells somewhat like a snowmobile when its idling. I also think the throttle responce schould be a little better, now i know its got 195,000 miles but what do you guys think is up. any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Hmm.. If the idle is rolling, there's probably a vacuum leak. You might also swab out your ISV. The 2-stroke smell means it's burnin' oil. You might need some valve stem seals to stop that. The exhaust should have too much effect on how it idles. Try giving it a good tune up. Plugs, check the timing, filters, blah blah yadda yadda. That'll probably take care of most of it. Good luck.

Re: Question for you 16v guys (rocco2nr)

is it mostly noticable when you're travelling at higher speeds and then just take it ouf gear,, where it would go all the way down to almost dying (and maybe die) and then back up and so? if so, check your intake tube as well as the plaxtic cover over the fuel distributor (what's that part called, anyway)..

Actually when i'm travelling at high speeds then push the clutch in it holds a good idle, its just if i sit at a red light or somehting for more then 15 seconds or so it starts to want to die.

Re: Question for you 16v guys (93VdubSLC)

I just bought myself a 1987 1.8 16v also last week. I had the same problems. here is what i did.
check for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner. inspect the boot from the fuel distributer to the throttle body. then when you take off the boot from the fuel distributer check to see if the air plate is centered correctly. if not adjust. then take the 2 screws of the TOP of the fuel distributer. and look underneath or just take off the top of the airbox and clean it good with carb cleaner, just make sure it doesnt get on the filter or in the airbox. then take off the idle stabilizer and clean that off the carb cleaner. then get electric connection cleaner and clean as many electric connections and grounds you can, be careful of rubber.also check the spark plugs and adjust the air/fuel mixture and idle screw. I did all of this and the car runs strong as balls, and the idle is much much better. it still gets lump 3 times after i stop only sometimes tho. I'm still in the process. next it wires/o2 sensor and then fuel pump filter etc. then id bascially have a all new fuel system. but it god better. hope it helps

Sometimes I'll have that problem as well! But usually after I just started it up. THe dash will start to shake, then it'll idle fine.
A few times it has even died on me @ a stop. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif I'm thinking vacuum leaks, that fact that my f motor mount needs replacing
might solve some problems as well! but do what eastcoastdubs said.

while holding the brakes, or can it be with no brakes too?
if with brakes could be the brake booster

how would the brake booster screw up the idle? Mine does the same. I've done just about everything to the fuel systems except or-rings, o2 sensor and check cat. It does it even if the brakes are off for me. If im on a hill i just put the ebrake on and feather the gas.
