Question to all vw owners

I'm thinking about buying a 1990 vw gti, it has 112k miles on it and selling for $2k. I've been told that vw's have lots of problems is this true? When I go look at the car, what should I be looking for? thanks

Re: Question to all vw owners (raiiden)

all cars have their problems. also depends on what motor is in the car, 8v(digifant injection) or a 16v(motronic)...both can be bulletproof or spastically un reliable depending on past owner's treatment....give more info on car...and it might be easier to help ya out!
the things to look for are the same you would look for in any used car: does it shift okay? does the motor start right up? and what sounds are associated with the startup(ie valve clatter, rod knock, hard starting) just think about what could be broken, and take a look at that( it is long list, so go over the car well(or have someone do it for you) good luck!

As for " I HEAR VW'S HAVE LOTS OF PROBLEMS " in my opinion there is no such thing as a problem-free car,
they will all have troubles someday, I had an A1 car that was beat to crap(autocrossed everyweekend, driven
to school every day, street raced...) and it stood up great, also My buddy is the original owner of a 78 rabbit
and he has taken excellent care of it, and ended up selling it recently with 325,000miles
on the original engine/tranny so there you go, if its treated right it wont poop out on you.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR -make sure it has a clean title ( not a wrecked car ) have someone who knows their Veedubs
inspect it . Check motor mounts, peeling of paint on shock towers inside engine bay ( sign of repetitive extreme cornering)
Tranny/engine leaks and you might want to take it through a car wash to check for leaks. just my 2 cents

Re: Question to all vw owners (duff_man2000)

make sure all hoses are not mushy
check for clutch grip (disengage then engage again at a good speed)
check alignment - see if it veers to either side, also check tires for uneven wear
check under mat in trunk for rust
see when timing belt was last done

I love my A2... But there's that something that A1's have that my car does not... i've owned 2 84 GTi's and they never once gave me any trouble A2 A1 Fo LIFE!
