Questions on modding an 83 Cabby...

388 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Kevin Rowley
I've got A2s and A2 stuff laying around, and I know very little about the A1.
I may have the chance to pick up a straight 83 Cabby. It has a 5 speed, a 1.8 (1.8, right, not a 1.6?), 164K miles on it, not sure of the engine or tranny code, the interior seems nice enough, but I wanted to know what stuff from my A2 will fit into the A1.
I've got my ABA engine with CIS head on it, and the Cabby is CIS, so no probs there...just a matter of wiring the KS into the A1 wiring. What do I do for engine mounts and so on....will I be using all A1 mounts?
I know the A1 has no subframe or k-frame under there, and some people get scirocco subframes to put on there...will an A2 k-frame fit? If I can get the A2 subframe to fit, can I run my A2 arms and poly bushings and so on?
What about my 9A tranny? What would be involved in fitting it in there? I'm thinking about the tranny mount thing specifically.
I just got the TT race downpipe....I could just use 16mm spacers at the manifold, to make up for the taller ABA, right?
It has single rounds now, US spec. Will my Hella e-code 7" rounds fit into the Cabby core support, or does it require the euro core support?
I imagine none of my Bilsteins/H&Rs will fit onto this thing, right?
I was under the impression a Cabby was lighter than a Rabbit, but have been told otherwise...they are heavier due to the extra rigidity built into the chassis, right? Where exactly is this extra support located on the car?
Any cheap and easy ways to lose weight in it?
My A2 is heavy at 2650, or 2850 with me in it....I was told the Cabby is about 2300 pounds....does that sound about right?
Any known problem areas on the A1 or Cabby that I should know about or look for? Bad windshield seals, known rust areas, cracked strut towers, etc...?
The car is in what appears stock condition. Original 13" steel wheels with cover, VW option cassette radio, the owners manual was even in the glove box. The top looks OK, but what should I look for in that? They were told it was new, but it looks kind of ragged inside....is it possible to just replace the outer skin? It fired right up, and idled OK, until we got rolling, then it had an idle hunt, where it would dip as low as 500rpm and sit for a seocnd or two, vibrating like mad, then climb back up to about 1K. I figure a vac leak, but that is no big deal. No grinds into 2nd either, but I didn't try driving it. Suspension is shot, but they'd be changed anyway if I got it

Anyway, thanks in advance for reading through this and for any answers or suggestions!

83’ most likely 1.7 like my ‘82 Rabbit Convertible
Not sure about cross polination from A2-A1
....will I be using all A1 mounts? Stock engine mounts should work fine.
A1 has no subframe or k-frame under there, and some people get scirocco subframes to put on - not sure what you mean by Scirocco subframe, if you mean lower strut brace, then YES. Makes a big improvement

Convertibles are heavier than Sedans, most of the bracing is down low on the chassis.

Look for obvious vacuum leaks
Replace the injector o-rings
Check the o-ring on the idle screw on the back of the throttle body.
Good luck,

Maybe not. If the 7" e-codes are from an A2 (OE or conversion), they will not fit, or at the very least not easily. If they are e-code replacements, they drop right in.

The Cabriolet is heavier. The bracing is found in the roll bar, rocker panels, between rear shock towers, kick panels, and knee bar.

It really all depends on how the car was optioned. A/C, automatic, and power steering all add weight. The pre-'84 models have a full size spare. I haven't checked the weight of my car in some time, but it seems like 2300-2500 is about right.
To satisfy some Vortexers:
'80-'84 = Rabbit Convertible
'85-'93 = Cabriolet
'95-> = Cabrio

Cool...I needed that info too!
As for the e-code lights...nope, they are OE lights on the A2 in europe...I put them on my US spec Golf as a conversion, but they are OE GTI 16V lights over there...I was hoping they'd drop right in...oh well.
So, my using 'Cabby' then isn't exactly correct, is it? Cabby would be OK for the 85-93 rides (the A2 years, yet it was still an A1 chassis, right?), maybe the 93-up rides, but is there any quick short word for Rabbit Convertible?
Thanks for the replies!

"Cabby" works for all A1 chassis topless Golfs. Welcome to the A1 fold.
