What is the canister on the midpipe? What does it do and do you have to have it?

I know practically nothing about exhaust systems but my guess would be that it's a resonator (helps quiet it down).

So if I have a custom exhaust built for my jetta vr6 with no resonator will it be too loud? What about that sensor next to the resonator? Is that an O2 sensor or EGT?

The muffler I was thinking about getting is a dual 3.5 inch tip 5zigen style muffler made by a Japenese company! It looks really nice! I was going to mate that to custom 2.25 or 2.5 inche piping. I guess im gonna have to buy a resonator to quiet it down. thanks for the info all

I got the resonator taken out of my 2.5" turbo back system... it isn't a VR6 but it really didn't make it all that louder overall, just crisper sounding.
