the manual says 5w-40, but depending on your climate, you may be fine running a different viscosity. for instance, to cope with the extremely hot weather here in vegas, i use mobil 15w-50.
I just got 1.8t 2001 jetta and dealer says that I should run mobil 1 5w-40.. Is this correct?
My manual, for an 02 GTi 1.8T, says: recommended is 5W-40, but 5W-30 can be used if 5W-40 isn't readily available. Some people say differently though, seems that different manuals from different production dates have different recomendations. You'll get a whole barage of differing opinions, most will be for Mobil 1 0W-40, but I stick with 5W-40...just my preference. By the way, Mobil doesn't make a 5W-40 Mobil 1, only Delvac Mobil 1 5W-40 which is for trucks...but supposedly a great oil for our engines though.
Re: Quick Question: I just called dealer (improvius)
At first you want to run the oil that was put in the car first to "cure" the internals. Then you can run synthetic. I've always put 5W 30 in mine. Its fine.
Re: Quick Question: I just called dealer (CorradoG60)
if you can't handle using the search or figuring out what oil to use yourself (ie. read manual for example), then i recommend you take it to the dealership for oil changes. it's really not that much more... (at least not here in san diego)
good luck.
