Quick rattling noise underneath car...

98 GTI VR6. There's an odd rattling noise that comes and goes. It happens whether the car is idle, driving or turning. It sounds like it's coming from either underneath the driver's seat or underneath the e-brake. The sound is like a rattling thud-thud-thud-thud sound. Anyone have an ideas?
