I'm thinking of moving up a class next season (circle track racing) and want to stick with vw, but am unsure what to run as far as a motor goes. Looking for the best bang for the buck backyard engine build on a tight budget (less than $500 hopefully). Something with minimum machine work to keep cost down. Was thinking 1.8 with 16v pistons, solid head, big cam. Would love a 2L but they're pretty rare in the local junkyards. What would you do?

find an RD coded motor, I think that is a 10-1 comp. That will have the big vlv head on top of it too. I don't know if the 16v pistons will require machining to not hit things at TDC.
