Nope, It is euro-spec only.
IIRC it is a Clarion unit, so you may be able to find something similar stateside.

Re: Radio Navigation System (Godlike)

Not only is there no North American CD for it, but there's the issue of hooking up speed sensors, GPS antennas, etc. Could it be done? Probably, but it would be very difficult, and certainly not plug and play!
BTW, I have played with one of these units in a fully loaded Sharan V6 - nice unit! I love the pleasant fraulein's German voice when it prompts you to turn or whatever.

Re: Radio Navigation System (edkim)

Well, ex-cuuuuse me for stepping in, but I was the guy who took that picture and posted it in the first place.
1) It will plug and play, it gets all it's speed info, etc. from existing car inputs.
2) The antenna required is a simple swap-out - see this thread: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=152060
3) The only thing that will prevent it from being fully functional is that CD's containing the required street mapping data are not provided for North America. The nav data is provided by NavTech, who supply about 99% of the OEM and aftermarket GPS manufacturers with their nav data. But, to allow all the manufacturers to make a nice profit on the data, they package the data in proprietary format for each different manufacturer (e.g. BMW, Ford, GM, VW, etc.). VW doesn't offer nav as an option in North America, therefore, NavTech does not make a CD for the VW unit that contains North American streets data.

Re: Radio Navigation System (PanEuropean)

I have a Garmin GPS unit on my 2k1 VR6. I loooooooooove it. It takes me everywhere I want.
For the price I payed i think it's a good investment if you travel a lot (i don't but i wanted to have it). Some ppl might say it sucks. I disagree but everyone has a right to have their own opinion.
Mine is the Street Pilot Color Map. Not the latest unit (they got a new one a few months ago). If you get the US Road Maps CD-ROM and a nice 132mb cartridge you can pretty much get highly detailed maps in a 1000-mile radius. It gives you data on entertainment, lodging, restaurants, etc...etc... The only problem is that the unit is $500 and the cd-rom plus cartridge is about $300. If you want to plan a long trip, you have to do it, point by point which can be really tedious if you're in a hurry... (it took me 30 minutes to plan a trip from Orlando to Upstate NY)
The new unit does it all for you, giving you the fastest, shortest, scenic routes, etc... for about $900. I don't think you need a cartridge anymore and the maps are downloadable from the internet with a special key.
You can put it in your dashboard for better view. For those of you who hate to have something in their dashboard, that might not be a good idea but for those of you who don't care (you get used to it pretty quick, plus you don't have to stare down to see where you're at, you pretty much have right in front of you hence safety...) like me. I have my unit underneath the mirror, plus i have a radar detector and i'll soon have a blue light (i volunteer at a fire station)
I'm sure there are store where you can try it for 30 days or something... check it out!
Hope it helps a few of you...

Re: Radio Navigation System (PanEuropean)

Is it plug and play? Well that all depends on your def. of Plug and Play. The head unit is only one of the 25 parts listed in the ETKA to support the OEM NAV system. You would need the control unit which goes in the trunk below the changer, the radio antenna, and the controler for it. The list is long and detailed and not worth it if you ask me...

Re: Radio Navigation System (BoraSport)

Our discussion is academic, because we can't get the data CD's here. However, I don't think that there is a whole lot of work you would need to do to put the unit in.
I spend about a half an hour going over the EKTA in Germany last week, looking at this, because I was toying with the idea of installing it just to get the TV reception. I gave up when the price started going over $2K US....

Re: Radio Navigation System (PanEuropean)

From what I can tell current Porsche NAV system CD's will work in this unit. They are manufactured for the US by the same company. So you could do it, the question is, would it be worth it. All tell you right now if the price were just $2k I would do it in a heart beat but I think this would be pushing $3k after you were done with shipping and all of the parts.

Re: Radio Navigation System (BoraSport)

Hey BoraSport, now that's a good idea - using the Porsche CD's. I never thought of that.
I'll be back in Europe next week - I'll ask the parts dude at the dealer to shove a Porsche CD in it, and see if it works. Will let you know. However - I'm not optimistic about it. From a purely technical point of view, it should work. But the issue here is not a technical one, it's a profit one - the nav CD's are deliberately not compatible from brand to brand. I'll bet you a cup of coffee that the data supplier (NavTech) has made sure that not even an Audi CD will work in a VW nav unit.

Re: Radio Navigation System (PanEuropean)

For $2K I would do it as well. I also want that ESP button to replace my ASR as well!!
I've also toyed with the idea of a PC in there but I was planning on putting a slide out and tilt up screen where the cup holders are. Will take too much time and money and probably by the time I finish the car would be old and rusty anyway.

SSheikh:
Heck, the ESR button is cheap like borscht, less than $20. In appreciation of all the knowledge you have so generously shared with me and everyone else on this BB, I'll buy you one for Christmas (or Hanukah, Ramadan, Kwanza, winter solstice, whatever you celebrate). It's on me. Send me an email offline and let me know your postal address.

Re: Radio Navigation System (PanEuropean)

I bought a 7inch LCD to replace my cup holders. I don't allow food or beverage in the car anyway so I might as well use the the space for something useful. Now I just have to figure out how to get the screen to come out of the slot and roll up...
