ran some tests with a temp gauge

ok, i ran around 6 tests with a stock airbox, and a bmc cda.
first test, stock airbox, probe in stock snorkel location, right after the front grille.
at idle temperatures were 15deg above ambient temperature
after 2mins at WOT, intake temperatures were 7degrees lower than ambient temperature
second test, stock aribox, probe at maf location.
intake temperatures were 23degrees warmer than ambient at idle
after 2mins WOT intake temperatures were 19degrees warmer than ambient air
third test, bmc cda, probe at maf location, with pipe extemding to lower drivers side grille.
at idle temp was 7degrees warmer than ambient at idle
after 2mins wot intake temperatures were 7degrees cooler than ambient.
either my gauge sucks azz or this is some pretty useful information.
ill be doing some more testing after my car is up and running again, ill also be doing some post IC temp diagnostics.
oh and for all you guys looking for those a-pillar gauges, sorry ive been slacking, but ive sent svtmafia the originals and will try and host them again. they look sweet.
i have 5 gauges in my car now - kinda b52 bomber style

sound interesting. Wouldn't VAG-COM block test be more accurate ?

Dude, nobody here wants to see anything USEFUL. Don't you know that? I went to all the trouble to do before/after block 120 dynos on the Neuspeed TIP (that 110 people just bought in a group buy here) and posted it last night. I got 1 reply, maybe 25 looks, and it's on the 5th page now.
Anyway, looks like the CDA does what it's supposed to and the stock system heats up rather easily. More evidence that a CAI should work.

dbrowne : only the oldbies like the info.
they are being killed by all the newbies, in search of r1cer wings and nawz
Re: ran some tests with a temp gauge (AxeAngel)

Giant wings add 15hp. We need more block 120 dynos on those bad boys.
Re: ran some tests with a temp gauge (dbrowne1)

I think it's very interesting, unfortunatly there is no cold air intake for a passat to my knowledge.
Keep up the good work.

Re: ran some tests with a temp gauge (sebz1.8t)

Cool info. I'm curious though. Is there any way to measure temps at the manifold or actually any place AFTER the turbo with the vag-com? I'm guessing no since I've never seen anything like that on here. Be cool if there was though.
Re: ran some tests with a temp gauge (AxeAngel)

You left out some important details. Did you let your engine cool off between runs? How did you test, by driving around the block, freeway driving, or in a garage? Sounds kinda hard to have the throttle on constantly for 2 min also, you must have had to let off the gas a little bit.

Re: ran some tests with a temp gauge (AxeAngel)

Axe... good testing... that 12º isnt chump change.... dang.... nice!
Sadly, I never did get a chance to test my car with my gauges installed with a CAI vs Stock... but its still really cold here in Cleveland.. hmm... like the other guy replied, how did you do these tests?
Any more details would be great... I'm really intersted... now here is another curiosity... I have my stock airbox and a K&N drop in now.. but I also have the BMC CDA tube (an extra one I had) running down to my lower grille... i wonder how that effects things? .. hmm!!

Its nice to see people actually doing usefull tests. A few questions for you. Do you have a 1.8t or vr. If you have a turbo i would like to see some intake temps after the intercooler and at what boost they occured. That would be very good info to have. Anyway keep up the good work. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: ran some tests with a temp gauge (Bundaho)

car was allowed to cool 10mins between runs.
i was on the throttle for the full 2mins(im crazy didnt ya know that?)
done on a lonely patch of I4...
ill do block 120's for all of you soon

On my AWP I have logged 011 which gives Coolant Temp & Intake Temp (Celcius). However, I am not sure at what point in the intake this measurement is taken. I think you can also log 004 on some earlier cars for same info
Re: ran some tests with a temp gauge (UKAUSSI)

Info is taken directly after the throttle body on earlier cars, and off the top of my head I believe they are also there on the newer cars. Have not really looked into it that much recently.
Re: ran some tests with a temp gauge (Chris-A.W.E)

Thanks Axe for the info. Good to know my CDA is doing its job!

Yeah it shouldn't be hard to tell. Just look for an IAT sensor on the TB and there's your answer.
By the way, I for one find this to be very useful testing. This does pretty much confirm that CAI's do indeed draw cooler air in the real world.
