Rattles inside my steering column!

There is something rattling inside my steering column, and it's only been getting worse. Rattles are always hard to find because bumps in the road are unpredictable, but I drove down a brick road yesterday and something in there was definitely rattling the whole way. I tried pushing, pulling, prodding everything I could on the outside of the plastic casing, to no affect. So, anyone ever unscrew the plastic casing around their steering column? I'm just wondering what I should expect in there.

Re: Rattles inside my steering column!

welcome to the rattling steering column club! My 2000 GLS does the same thing, especially over bumps the rattles get really loud. For a while I thought it was the little flimsy plastic guard that covers the insides when the wheel is all the way down, but that does not seem to be rattling any more. It is definitely something way down inside the column.
I'll even use the mad thingy:

BTW: I like your list of mods!
I have the 1.8T badge for extra speed too...

I have the same problem. However, it mostly occurs when I am driving on the freeway. I find that if I jam my finger between the steering wheel adjusting lever and and the steering column it quits. It is tremendously irritating!

I had a similar thing in an old Prelude. Whenever I went over bumps, it was like two long rods clanging together. I never did figure it out. My guess was that these things should of had some sort or restraint or cushions, but didn't. Oh well.

the noise didn't use to be there. It's only developed in the last few months. It wouldn't even be so bad if it wasn't RIGHT THERE, in front of me, which makes it extra annoying. I think I'm going to try taking stuff apart. It's too inconvenient for me to go to the dealer, which is 40 miles away, only to have them give me a BS line like, "Could not replicate symptoms."

creaking

Mine sounds like loud plastic creaking. I was actually driving on a washboard dirt road and it was going nuts so I started tapping around the column. When I hit between the ignition and base, it stopped briefly. That seems to be where mine is, just on the other side of the key. It was nice to actually be able to make it stop, even for just a minute or so.
Rattles drive me crazy!!!
