I have a Blaupunkt Alaska II in my GTI, and I love having the RDS display of whatever text the station chooses to broadcast (station ID, current song, etc.) Is this a feature of the standard (non-Bose/non-Nav) tuner in the US-spec A3? If not by default, can it be activated via VAG-COM (like the different frequency spacing for Europe vs. US)?

yes. the standard stereo in the us-spec a3 is the concert II, which has the rds. the upgrade is the symphony II ($900) which, as near as I can tell, just adds a six-disc in-dash changer in place of the single-disc unit. both have a mid-range and tweeter in each of the four doors as well as a center fill speaker in the dash and a powered subwoofer in the back behind a panel.
