I don't have a Bentley manual and I have heard conflicting stories regarding re-using the 4 bolts that hold in the rear engine mounts after replacing the bushings. I have my prothane bushings, but don't know if I need to buy new bolts or not. When I talked to the VW parts dept the guy said the bolts didn't say anything about being stretch bolts. SO CAN THEY BE RE-USED or are NEW BOLTS A DEFINITE MUST? If new ones are needed it's not worth screwing up my car to save $15 in parts. Thanks.
Additionally, can someone with a Bentley manual tell me what the torque specs are for each of the 4 bolts for a 1.8T?

Re: Rear Engine (dog bone) mount bolts- 1 time use or re-use? (HK_PREDATOR)

It would be safer just to get the new bolts, instead of saving a inital 15 bucks then having to get back under the car if they break later down the road. Spend the 15 bucks!

Well I took the chance and reused mine......about 6 months ago and I have had no problems....but the bolts did stretch when I reinstalled them. Kinda scary but it works fine. I might replace them oneday.

Re: Rear Engine (blackwolf1.8t)

BLACKWOLF1.8T: Thanks for the torque settings. Do you have the Bentley manual? If so, does it say to replace the bolts? I think I'm going to replace anyway.
Seems like alot of you guys are rolling the dice by reusing the bolts. What would happen if the bolts tore lose at 125 MPH? If you're supposed to change them then you guys are all nuts. That rear mount is under a tremendous amount of torque. Thanks all.

Why does everyone one think they know more than the engineers that designed their car? Sometimes I just can't understand the thinking that goes behind saving $15 on such critical parts. Look at DBJ - he just cracked his dogbone!

Re: Rear Engine (2001GTI)

I already ordered the bolts and am waiting for them to come in. I'm just anxious to put in the inserts, but I can wait another couple days to do it right. 2001GTi, your transmission is going to fall out on Rt. 3 someday. LOL.

Re: Rear Engine (HK_PREDATOR)

Don't have a Bentley, but I did mine two weeks ago and I replaced the bolts. Like everyone has been saying, its only $15-16 bucks. If you can't wait, put the new bushings in now and re-use the bolts, then when the new ones come in from the dealer, put the new ones in. Just a suggestion, it only takes like 5 mins to get the bolts in and out. The hardest part is getting the dogbone back together and screwed in tightly.

The reason is that some are smart enough to know that VW is a corporation, and by nature exist to make $$$$$$$. Thus the doubt about things such as must replace bolts...... Reference the fact that green top CTS's are now $15- $20 after they sold for $4 and change until VW realized that they were selling like hotcakes due to THEIR incompitance in supplier selection and quality enforcement of the faulty black top sensors!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Rear Engine (mr_no_it_all)

they ARE stretch bolts in the mounts, doesnt matter which mount you're doing, replace em. ecstuning.com sells a kit with replacement dogbone bushings and new bolts for like $35.
$15 extra now or alot of time and trouble drilling broken bolts and installing heli-coils......your choice
