Umm yes, I'd like that 32" TV there.

Salesman said it was the first VW he'd put a 32" tv in the back of. Of course he didn't know what it was either until my wife told him as I pulled around. Golfs aren't too popular around here.

Re: Reason number 1027 to have a Golf (Retro)

Yeah, the amount that the Golfs can hold is unbelievable sometimes. My room mate got this huge armchair and there was no way he was fitting it in his Saturn, so we took my car. When we got there, the movers bringing in the new furniture for the armchair donor had already arrived. As we were carrying the armchair out, one of the looks at the chair, looks at the car, then says "There's no way that's going to fit it there" with a grin on his face. So I said, "Have a little faith"

Sure enough we rolled out 10 minutes later, with zero visibility out the back, and about an inch of space between all sides of the chair and the car.
My car has also seen the entire contents of dorm rooms, our packaged 27" TV, and countless other carrying duties. I don't think it's backed down once

Re: Reason number 1027 to have a Golf (asparks)

I just helped a friend move with my Golf and he was shocked to see how much room it has with the back seats down. Needless to say, we didn't need to borrow the Toyota pick-up.

In the box.
Had the seats folded down. By contrast the old 27" w/o a box fit in the trunk with the seats up.
It is amazing how much space there is in that little car!

Reason# 1028
Full blown Baby Crib weight over 160 LBS. This puppy took two people to load. (Some Fancy thing made in Italy) With Day bed. Yes, the guy said no way. Front passenger seat pulled forward. Rear seat head rest removed seats droped down. Rear deck removed, Wala it's a SUV. And the trunk closed. Did I mention this car ran 15.0 in the 1/4 mile and will hit a top speed that will have your license taken away for a very long time. Did I mention the 3 baby tethers

Re: Reason number 1027 to have a Golf (asparks)

I got a 19" PC Monitor at Costco last week (if you've never seen one, that's a *big* box). I wheeled the beast out to the GTI, folded down the seats, placed the headrests in the little holders and slid the monitor in.
Hmmm... after looking at the situation I flipped the seats back up and damnit all if the monitor didn't fit perfectly in the hatch area with only the cargo cover removed.
I love my GTI http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Reason number 1027 to have a Golf (asparks)

I actually drew a crowd while loading a new 27" Sony Wega in my 87 Golf GT. I had to re-arrange some of the crap I carry around in the rear, but otherwise it was put the rear seat up and slide the TV (in the box) inside.
My sweetest score came while moving. I had taken out the passenger seat as well as the rear bench for maximum cargo. (Can't do that in the 2001 without risking the passenger side airbag!) Coming home, there was a really nice wooden stereo cabinet, 6' tall and 30" wide, sitting on the curb with a sign saying "free." I pulled up to the curb and listened to the people on the front porch joke with each other about what I thought I was going to do. Open the hatch, slide the entire cabinet in the car with one motion, close hatch, drive away smiling.
Golfs are great.

Re: Reason number 1027 to have a Golf (asparks)

The day after I brought my Golf home, I won a 27" TV in a raffle. Folded down the seats and it slid right in with room to spare.
The '93 Civic I traded in would hold a lot, but it had to be the right shape. 6' step ladder, no problem, but when I bought a computer, I was stuck in a parking lot taking everything out of the boxes so it would go in.

Similar thing for me when I moved to Harleysville 1-2 years ago. Me and a friend broke our back and legs lifting a 32" Sony WEGA TV into my Mk4 GTI. Threw in some shelves and a bunch of blankets for good measure. Damn that thing was heavy!!! It did fit, though, with a decent amount of room to spare.

My first Golf (A2) held 7 kegs with the seat down. I blew both rear shocks and bump stops. They were pep boys shocks so I didn't care (lifetime warranty).
My MkIV holds a boatload. Get a roofrack and you'll be wise not to let your friends know how much your car can carry, otherwise they'll treat you like the friend with a pick up come moving time.

Re: Reason number 1027 to have a Golf (sipman)

A week after I bought my 2000 Golf GLS, I bought a new Dell. I popped the seats down, slid all three boxes in and still had a ton of room to spare. One of our clients came out as I was loading everything, and he goes, "Wow, what kind of car is that?" I took him for a drive around the block. He was like, "My wife would kill me if I bought a car that's this much fun."
What's he driving now? Oh yeah, a 1.8T GTI. Oh and did I mention his is silver, too? Ha ha ha. Gotta love the power of the Hatch. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I was reading this post, and the bit about the little holders for the headrests caught my eye. What "little holders" might those be?
Anyways, I regularly (every weekend) need to haul around a bunch of PA equipment (4X10 bass amp, power amp racks, effects racks, guitars, light rig, etc...) for shows with my band, and I'm continually amazed at how much stuff I can fit in my GTI!!

Re: Reason number 1027 to have a Golf (NoLimit)

When you flip the rear seat bottoms up the little holders in the back of them that becomes the top that allows you to take your rear headrests and slid them into the seat bottom and store them there until you flip the seatback back up.
That clear enough?

Re: Reason number 1027 to have a Golf (asparks)

When I picked up my 32" tv in my 01 GTI, the guys at the store thought I was nuts. But fold down the seats & the tv (packed in it's original box) slid right in with about 1 inch on both sides, then right behind it went the tv stand. All this & the lid closed with no problems. Needless to say the guys at the store had their jaws on the ground. One of them said "Man don't ever get rid of this car!"

Yep -- I guess I never took the time to look all that closely. Thanks Sparky! I'll go look at my new favorite feature tonight!
