I will be having my 4K transmission rebuilt soon and was wondering if I could do it myself. I have a bentley but I was wondering if you need any special tools. I had this tranny in my 16V rabbit over the summer and it leaked oil and ground in 2nd and 3rd so I assume it needs synchros. I would also like to put a tall 5th gear in it. How hard are all of these things to do? HWere can I get the synchros and the gasket set? Also would it be better for me to just send the tranny out to someone and have them do it for me? Thanks

Yes, but depending on how rebuilt you decide, you'll need more tools and parts.

The Bentley covers the rebuild procedure in full, and even tells you where the special tools are used. As far as NEEDING them, they are handy, but you can get around them.
