recall for 2.0l

1111 Views 20 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  nasacrugti
i got my recall notice yesterday for 99-01 2.0l golf/jetta/bug for the oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold. i'll be taking my car in on the 20th of this month for the service. has anyone gotten this service yet? i wanted to know if it helps gas mileage any. supposedly if the sensor is malfunctioning, the engine will use too much gas (rich? or is that in terms of air?
) thus decreasing mpg. soooo, if a sensor is replaced the mpg should increase
, but only if the sensor malfunctioned in the first place. i get about 300-320 mpt, roughly low 20's mpg. i'm hoping that it's due to my sensor. p.s. it's a manual, and i don't drive like a maniac...always

Re: recall for 2.0l (bluebora2.0)

I took my car in today for a CEL problem . . turns out it was the O2 sensor . . . I didn't get no recall notice!

Anyways, my gas mileage had gone to poop for damn sure . . . I hope this helps . . I would imagine it to do so . .
also, my car reeked of gas or burning smells when I would get out of it.

Re: recall for 2.0l (bluebora2.0)

I have 2001, and it is has 17500 on it, and not one problem. Except, I cant find enough cash to support my modding habit
Re: recall for 2.0l (bluebora2.0)

do we need to receive the recall notice to get it replace or can i just go into the
dealer??
Re: recall for 2.0l (bluebora2.0)

Re: recall for 2.0l (bluebora2.0)

is this serious, cause i have noticed that the gas dissappears a bit quicker than normal, I have always thought i did so much to the car that it would naturally suck up all that gas, 4 gallons of gas a day in about 60 or so miles, i dunno, how do we know for sure that its the O2 sensor? Is there a fee, or does the car have to have a warranty left? i have a few mods, and i just thought thats what cam with the mods, more gas consumption.?
Re: recall for 2.0l (SergeAugustin)

I haven't received the recall notice yet. I took my car into the dealer this week for 30K and they didn't say anything about it.
Re: recall for 2.0l (haunted reality)

Last month I got a CEL and brought it in. It was the O2 sensor and it was replaced under the recall. I never received a letter either. When i did have the CEL, my car had reduced gas efficiency as well as horrible acceleration. i imagine it was running too rich (bad smell & decreased mileage). I also had my coolant temp sensor replaced under warranty. i guess those are suspect as well.
When i got the car back, it seemed like new. More power and fuel efficiency. Although, i think the TSB says that there is no effect on performance. I think there was.
Re: recall for 2.0l (rgGolf4)

ok....WTF? I though VW's were supposed to be reliable. I almost bought a 02 Gti and now im glad i didn't. My roomates 00 jetta has had to have the tranny replaced, exhaust redone, and now the dealer is telling him he might need a whole new engine!!!!! Thats ridiculous since he only has like 25k on so far.
Re: recall for 2.0l (ri-v-dub)

C'mon peeps. Use the search function if you need info. The recall applies to all 1999.5-2000 2.0L Golf/Jetta/Beetle owners ONLY during those years. It doesn't apply to 2001 and 2002 models so I guess there was a change in the O2 sensor. VW also has to reprogram your computer to work with the new sensor in reducing emissions but I don't think it'll affect mileage much.
BlueBora2.0......I am getting about 10-20 miles per tank more than you but I am running a Tornado and Halo plugs which are supposed to add much more mileage than that. My car's CEL is on and I am taking it in tomorrow for the 02 sensor but I think there is something else wrong because my engine is idling pretty rough. I'll let you know though if changing the sensor makes a big difference.

Re: recall for 2.0l (The_Vi_Don)

i had a CEL go on last month (24,000 miles) and I mentioned to the dealership that I had heard about a recall on MAF/o2 sensor....the guy tells me don't worry about it, VW didnt release the recall yet, and your car shouldnt have that problem. Well, I come back to pick up the car, and ask them what the problem was, and he mumbles "o2 sensor/MAF". I ask, "then why won't VW recall our cars!!!"
I guess VW finally figured out that us customers are experiencing some problems.....

I imagine you can and they'll check your car. I'd wanted my headlights realigned on the Beammaster after my GTI headlight swap, so I was going in anyway; I asked them if they could check and see if the recall applied to the car while they were at it. It turned out it wasn't, so they marked "No recall required" on the work order and sent me on home after fixing the headlights. If you get the notice, you're definitely under recall; if you don't get one in a few weeks, talk to your dealer. (I haven't ever gotten a notice.)
Re: recall for 2.0l (DJKeebler)

DJKeebler - you have a tornado and halo plugs? never heard of halo plugs but everybody says that tornados are p.o.s...true? if you are getting that much more mileage then it must be doing something. my CEL is not on, but i don't think that means that my o2 sensor isn't malfunctioning.
Re: recall for 2.0l (bluebora2.0)

I've only had the tornado and plugs in for about a month and since my mileage is decent and I go til I am just about totally empty, I only have to put gas once every two weeks. And I've only had the car for just over 2 months so I really haven't used them long enough to know whether or not they are making that big a difference. But.....I will say I was getting about 300-315 miles per tank the first two tanks I filled and I'm getting about 330-340 now. Maybe it's my driving style. Could be the plugs and tornado. I'm hoping a new O2 sensor and fixing my rough idle will show a dramatic increase and make the cost of the tornado and plugs worth it. If not, they won't be getting repeat business from me.
P.S. Just for all you guys who say the Tornado is a P.O.S., if you haven't tried it yourself or directly know someone who has, then you have no place telling others it doesn't work. I have a friend that installed one in his Ford Ranger and he went from about 12 MPG to 19 MPG which is a huge increase in my book. Tornado says that not everyone will get the same results but how will I ever know unless I try.

I wish!
But I'll settle for the sensor replacement.
