Recaro seats - need ideas

468 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Diamond Dave
This weekend I tried to hook up the power to the '91 Jetta GLI Recaros that have been transplanted into my '87 Cabriolet. The passenger side worked, but it didn't sound very happy. I got a click from the driver's side, but no movement. I didn't have time to remove the seats, so I'm trying to plan for my next weekend's projects. Hence, my questions:
Are there any adjustments that can be made to the motors?
Can the motors be replaced? (I couldn't find a part number for the motors on the ETKA CD)
Can I swap the passenger side motor to the driver's side frame?
Any other options to consider?
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Not without tossing on a capacitor. What kind of adjustments did you have in mind?

Yup. You could probably match it pretty well with a motor out of an Audi. Just a guess though.

The beauty of Recaro's...Infinite adjustability. You could save time and just swap the frame I bet.

Did you install the original wiring harness from the donor car for the seats? It only takes a second to take out and put in. If you didn't get the harness, is your setup relayed?
Double check your connections. You might want to verify that the driver's motor is getting enough juice. My passenger motor was like yours until I cleaned up the connections. It's better, but could be stronger still.
Which Recaro's did you get? Black vinyl with Grey centers, blue vinyl with diagonal color blocks or Blue/grey fabric?

I have adjusted the tension on BMW power window motors to make them operate more smoothly. Didn't know if a similar adjustment was possible for these motors.

I'll keep that in mind. If I try it, I'll report back my findings.

Time to pull the seats out and scope out the possibilities...

Yes. I assume it came from the same '91 GLI, but I don't know that for sure.

My harness is fused, but not relayed; possibly this is the problem...

I'm thinking you may be onto something here. The driver's side seat has some corrosion on the wire that connects to the motors. I don't know how long the seats were out of the GLI before I bought them, so there may be some hope there.

Anthracite gray velour with patterned centers. The centers have black, blue, green and red threads running through the anthracite cloth. I also have the matching rear seat from the GLI to use for some fabrication of a rear seat cover.
Thanks for your help. I'll post back to update.

Didn't know about the tensioner for those motors. You BMW guys have all the slick toys!
I didn't read close enough. I see that you said they were '91 seats. Same as mine. My relay is not fused, but I have thought about doing it to get some more juice.
