Re: reliability (16vnotchback)

Hey, good decision to get a CGT (aka 4000GT). I just got one myself! The 2.2 ltr inline 5 is a very long lasting engine. Mileage matters little to the engine. As long as the rest of the car is in good shape, it will be reliable. The do have a few issues, like window regulators going south and little things like that, but overall are very reliable. If you really love CGTs, see if you can find one of the more rare 1987.5 CGTs. They came with some cool goodies that other CGTs didn't get: 2.3 ltr 130HP NG engine, 4 wheel disk brakes, body colored spoiler and B pillars, and a somewhat nifty all digital dash. Another one to keep your eye out for is the 1986 Commeratiove Edition (CE) Coupe GT. It was the only other one with the digital dash. Anyway here are some links you will want to check out if you are going to own a CGT:

Re: reliability (absolutcq20v)

Coupe GT is an excellent vehicle. I have owned my 84 since it had 124k miles on it. I have never owned a car that was as much fun and as reliable. Back in the early 80's this car was rated as one of the best handling cars available by Road&Track. I have modified mine extensively and it has been a very reliable car. The 5cyl engine is bulletproof, and the transmission behind the five cyl has 5k internals in it so it is very robust. Somehow I managed to break the pinion gear in mine at around 145k miles, but I think that was freakishly unusual.
No, this car is in no way related to the Scirocco II. It is a completely different car. The Scirocco II is basically a Scirocco I/Rabbit/Jetta I, with a different body. The Coupe is built on a 4k chassis. Coupes are also very light for their size. Woe unto he who thinks that mine is just another slow Audi.

Re: reliability (16vnotchback)

Sorry there, the only Coupe GT-like car with Quattro that came state-side was the Ur-Quattro or the Quattro Turbo Coupe. Supposedly there is a N/A model with Quattro available in Europe. Of course, a conversion wouldn't be too hard methinks - a 4000Q would make an excellent donor car for a driveline swap and the whole driveline would only cost ~$300 at my local friendly junkyard
cool cars tho...

Re: reliability (billzcat1)

From what I understand making a non-Q into a Quattro is a fair amount of work. The driveline/exhaust tunnel is bigger on the Q cars so theres that. I have heard of people putting a coupe body on a 4kQ chassis, or welding in shock towers for the rear and what is needed to attach the subframe and make room for the exhaust and driveline, but after you do that you've got a mongrel. Mechanically you will need a transmission, driveline, and rear subframe/struts. I thought about it, but my coupe was a creampuff when I got her and I just couldn't think of hacking her up.

Re: reliability (Fourings)

I believe the most popular route is to find a scrapped quattro, and remove the floor section (complete with drivetrain etc.....), and cut out your floor. The a LOT of welding later (but less headaches than the adapting method), you've got yourself a monster.
