i was talking to this rocco guy who works at a local wreaker, and her said to remove porportioning valves and it would give you better braking.
is this right? he said they cause the rears to lock up easier. i know about 75% braking is up front, but what gives?
is this guy right or on crack?

Re: remove porportioning valves for better braking? (rockin16v)

IIRC, the Scirocco II uses two pressure reducers in the lines to the rear brakes - the A2 cars use an actual proportioning valve that's load sensitive.
Removing the pressure reduces will allow more brake force to the rear brakes at a cost of locking the rear wheels. I'm unsure if this will affect the front brakes. From my experience, this isn't a very bright idea - the rears will constantly lock which will cause some rather spectacular spins (BTDT). If you really want to experiement with front/rear brake bias, buy a bias adjuster instead.
All told - this guy is blowing smoke.

After I re-read your initial post, it's obvious that this guy is just trying to get YOUR car into his yard. He figures that you'll go home, rip out the pressure reducing valves and go blasting down your favorite road, spin under braking and do a Porsche imitation into a semi-solid object. When the insurance company totals your car, he gets all that Euro poop that isn't damaged.

Re: remove porportioning valves for better braking? (mgyip)

So the porportioning valves reduce the pressure? seems like an after thought by volkswagen. you'd think they would design the master cyclinder to reduce the pressure.
So i guess they are going on. BTW i am installing some SS goodridge lines, DOT5 fluid, and new porportioning valves (now).
thanks guys!
Ya i wasnt too sure casue this guys ride isnt all that nice, and he does seem a bit odd. i thought i would ask anyway. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

FWIW, a scirocco.org lister in the UK couldn't wait to get prop valves in his Scirocco with rear disk conversion. Said it kept wanting to spin on him. They're there for a reason, keep them!

Not quite an after thought, VW uses diagonal brake circuits for safety reasons so, one front wheel and the opposite rear wheel are on the same circuit this makes the pressure reducing valve necessary. BTW if you use DOT 5 brake fluid, make sure it's the stuff that's compatable with the DOT 3 or 4 fluid. DOT 5.1 I think?

Re: remove porportioning valves for better braking? (ABA Scirocco)

hey, thanks for the heads up.
its actually dot 4 (my mistake), and it will be a full flush with this new fluid.
ok, they (p-valves) are going in.

...and almost every other car manufacturer as it seems. Most american iron has a reducer in the back where the line splits to the rear wheels (older stuff). They still do it. I guess is the easiest way to deal with diagonal circuits when you want the pressure reduced in back. The master cylinder would have to be the same for both circuits.
And - like everyone else noted - don't remove any pressure reducers, proportioning valves, etc. Unless you like looking at your butt, of course.
