Hello, im new here and could use a little help...

Im currently repainting the black siding, fender flares, and black areas of the bumpers on my 1990 Golf.
I ran in to a couple problems while attempting to start the fender flares. Firstly my old body guy who put them on, apparently used some type of riveting system to keep them on. So, my only option now is to paint them on the car...

As risky as that sounds, my main problem lies in the fact that the bumpers would be alot easier to paint if they were off the car. Hopefully painting the fender flares would also be easier without the bumpers being in a tiny bit in the way.
So, im just wondering if there is anything special i need to do in order to get the bumpers off? hopefully a couple bolts? im not sure as i've never tried.
I looked at the rear bumper, and from a quick glance noticed one large screw on the left side, and the only thing i can grasp from looking at the front bumper is there are two bolts holding the bumper on, located on the front beside the license plate (which i know shouldnt be there, but i was very naive first time car buyer).
Thanks for any help offered

Re: Removing Bumpers (8vRocket)

4 bolts in the front, 4 bolts in the rear. All 17mm. Spray em down with a few shots of WD-40 and have a coke and a smile. When youre done sippin-they should be loose enough that a cheater pipe on the end of your rachet should make it easier.

Re: Removing Bumpers (dreaminginboost)

you dont need to take the bumper rebar off, just the plastic cover. i justed repainted my stuff with, not just black paint, but black *flexible paint* specially for bumpers. to get the cover off, just grab ahold of one side, and yank. there are two slide on clamps, one on either side of the, and pressure clips all the way down the middle. the pressure ones pop out, and when you're ready, they pop right back in. email if you need more help http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Removing Bumpers (vw fiend)

Be careful when just removing the cover-those clips are at least 10 years old and some may already be broken. Once they break-the skin is pretty much toast. Then its time to Drill-and-Drive
