Removing Window Crank Handle - Help

1396 Views 15 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Air_Cooled_Nut
I am trying to remove my rear left door pannel and the only thing still holding it on is the manual window crank. I've tried every way I can to remove it without breaking it but can't figure it out. Anyone got any ideas please.

This is just a thought. If you have a local stereo shop, where the guys working there are cool, you could ask them to pop it off. I'm sure they have some sort of special tool that they use to take off door panels when they replace speakers.
Just a thought.

No special tool needed. Just turn the handle so it's pointing down. There is a ring that is touching the door panel itself. Pull just the ring straight up. You will be able to pull the handle off then. Let me know if you need more info.

Call me crazy but all you need to do is remove the plastic pop off piece on the handle crank itself. Once the handle cranck covering is removed, there should be screw behind it and you need to remove the screw to remove the handle crank. I used a flat head screw driver to pry off the handle cranck cover.

I figured there was a plastic piece covering the handle and tried to remove just that, but I guess i didn't get under it to pop it off. I'll try again, Thanks guys

in my nissan truck I had there was something called a "C" clip that holds that on (no bigger than a paper clip).
they do have a tool that gets it off but its just as easy for you to do it with a hook or something, shouldn't be difficult, and if you break it, you can buy them 100 for 5 dollars

No clip. No screw. No nothing. Just pull up on the ring and it will come right off. Trust me on this one.

You'll kick yourself when you see how easy it is. At least, it's this way on my car.

I don't have an A3 in front of me so I was just guessing.

Yeah, it's definately just that little plastic ring. When I was trying to figure it out it drove me nuts tried everything, then my friend came over and just popped it off and called me an idiot.

I tried to take mine off and just gave up...How does this ring come off, we're talking about the ring behind the crank leaver itself? Mine is a solid ring (I think) so how would it pop off?

Re: Removing Window Crank Handle - Help (Pagano)

It doesn't pop off. It just slides up. If your looking straight down at the lever, grab the ring and pull it straight up..It might take a little force, but it will go.

Yep. It slides about 1/4 of the way off and stops...then the handle comes right off. I messed with it for about 1/2 hour before I figured it out the first time I did it...I wanted to just rip the thing off. You will be mad when you see how easy it is.
