I'm about to order my Remus exhaust for my Jetta.
What is the difference between the universal and the jetta specific. I was told that the sound is the same, and the universal is about $100 cheaper so I was wondering what the differences are. Are there any advantages to either one?
Also, I'm planning on having the install shop cut my stock valance to make it fit better, which would fit better? with the 4-motion valance?
Thanks in advance. Search disabled

Re: Remus - universal or specific? (thajettamaster)

berg - i replied to you on the other thread. Basically, the universal is smaller and does not have the axel back piping. This allows for a universal fitting for most cars. Now, since you are going to cut your valance like I did mine, the universal will fit better because it allows you to have it sit higher to make the tips fit with the cutout. The vehicle specific sits lower, designed to go with the stock valance with no cutout. Also, the universal will be a little louder. The vehicle specific is very quiet, almost too quiet, and you don't really hear it unless you ram on your throttle. You've seen my car, and I have the Remus universal with the custome cutouts on the stock valance.

thanks sniper. yea you're car is sweet, i like the way the exhaust looks. few more questions though. is the universal alot louder, i really don't want something too loud, especially on the highway since i commute 50 miles a day to work.
anyone have any sound clips available? also anyone have any pics of the available tips? yours are a bit too big for my taste. thanks again

the only other tip Remus have that are smaller are some dual round or oval ones. and it's not overly loud. sounds great on the vr6. thats my opinion. the specific is very quiet. almost stock until you really ram on it.

yes and no. it will give some gain, but not as much as a vehicle specific. you need to get the mid piping done, and the muffler shop can easily do that by customizing a pipe for you from the cat back to the muffler. this will give you significant gains.

you commute 50 miles ONE WAY ??! that must be far.. it's like living up in Bergen but working in Middlesex.

Here's a thought. Wait until VW has their performance exhaust for the 24V cars with the exhaust cutout. Then, you'd end up with a vehicle specific Remus, with VW's lifetime warranty instead of Remus' 2 years, that would fit with an exhaust cutout.

but you'd end up paying like $300 more for the exhaust and you have to have them install it, which will be another arm and leg. i doubt the Remus muffler will go bad that quick.

yea the remus universal is $250 at momentum. can't beat that price. the VW one they have now is $400. I know people who have had their Remus for 3 winters, 1 of them lives in Norway, and no problems. That's the least of my worries to be honest. Besides, i can't wait, i want it now

i just have a 1.8T clip -
The Remus specific is a great fitting piece - but without modification it will not work with the 4 motion valence........it is designed to sit below the stock bumper - so get the specific if you want to use a 4-mo valence - but the difference in price will be made up by getting the over axle pipes made.......

1. $300 more? Show me a vehicle specific Remus for $175 or less.
2. Have to have the dealer install it? No you don't. Just go to the parts counter and buy it. VW's lifetime warranty is not contingent upon the dealer installing. It does, however, have to be properly installed for the lifetime warranty.
3. Betting the Remus won't go bad that quick? Actually, you're betting the acid in your exhaust will never eat thru the Remus for as long as you own the car. Lifetime warranty means for as long as you own the car. You're right the Remus should last at least 2 years. But, the question is will it last 5, 6, or even 8 years. It would be a lot cheaper to buy the VW exhaust rather than 2 separate Remus because one blows out after 2 years.
Also, don't compare the vehicle specific to the universal. Even Remus says the vehicle specific is superior to the universal. It is designed to improve performance of the specific vehicle. The universal is just a muffler that will fit the space. It is not designed to improve performance, only to sound louder.
