Replace single DIN with double DIN Problem

Hi, when I got my 2002 wagon two months ago, it did not have the new double DIN radio, even though the dealer had told me it had. The dealer told me they would replace it with the double DIN in a few weeks. He now has the double DIN radio but says the service department has been told by VW not to do the switch since they have had electrical problems on other passat. Something to do with grounding.
Has anybody heard about this ? And what should I do since I really want the new double DIN.
