Seems my starter has developed a noisy malady and a hesitation to turn the engine, how difficult is it to replace the starter in a 1997 Jetta 2.0 (manual 5spd)? I'd like to rectify the situation before it just doesn't start at all. What is the consensus on the best workshop manual?
Mechanical background: former mechanic working on British sportscars, everything from Lotuses to MGs.
In the mean time, I get to get to drive the other VW in the driveway, a 2002 Jetta 1.8T which I don't enjoy nearly as much (the tiptronic isn't quite that fun, but that is why I suppose it is the woman's car).
Thanks,
Kai

If you have any mechanical experience, don't bother with a service manual to swap the starter. Its a breeze. Right on the front of the motor, you could probably do it blindfolded.

Whoa...starter on 2.0L is tied into the front motor mount. Don't go telling this guy its just like any ol car. Normally two bolts and the wire disconnect and you're done. Here you need to support engine to take pressure off front mount B4 pulling starter. Just did all this to get at the damn crankshaft speed sensor...then it turned out not to be the reason I have no spark!

disco battery. and wiring from starter. place a block of wood under oil pan or find an ear sticking off of the block to support front of engine. remove weight off front mount with jack. R&R the starter. reinstall mm and your done

Re: Replacing Starter (spitpilot)

I agree that's it's harder than older VWs but I had mine off when I did my clutch and it's still not that big of a deal
