A new report says that Volkswagen is planning on claiming another trophy case full of track records for the ID. R. The all-electric track monster is headed to Sonoma Raceway, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and it might even be getting replaced by an even faster version.

News of the attempts comes from Auto Express , which reports that VW and the ID. R are looking at beating the Sonoma Raceway record set by a Formula 1 car. Esteban Gutierrez has the top time, set in a 2016 Mercedes-AMG W07. They're also headed back to the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer, looking for an official track record.

Last year, VW set a 41-second shocker of a time, but it was on Saturday. So apparently it doesn't count. Sunday's time was slower because it was a wet and rainy run up the hill.

With endurance racing champ Romain Dumas behind the wheel, the ID.R has already taken records away from gas-powered vehicles on Pikes Peak and unofficially at Goodwood, and has the EV record on the Nurburgring at just over six minutes. It's also run up a mountain pass in China setting a record time, but also a first timed time. They were the first to run the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road on the clock officially.

The report also says that VW is planning a new Mark-2 ID.R to go even quicker on road and track. No details yet, but expect the usual more power, better aero, less weight, more grip, and a longer range, all showing us that electric can be just as exciting as combustion power.
