no doubt, clean it and use silicone if it's in bad condition.

i just fixed my leaky 6 month old valve cover gasket. it was leaking by the T-belt where the half moon piece sits. I replaced that piece with a new one for an 8V car (aren't they the same ? ) and so far no leaks. the old gasket looked in good condition. couldn't VW attach the half moon thingies on the outer gasket ?

I remember they attached the half moon to the valve cover gaskets to the g60 & aba heads, too bad not on the 16v's.
