Reverse light

Mine works VERY occasionaly. What could be the problem? The switch obviously works...kinda.

Mine works all the time... When I'm in fourth gear The reverse lights never worked right on my 83 GTi, and they obviously don't work right on my 88, so I think its just a VW thing.
