Jerry was an industry icon, and the first reporter to correctly point out that the domestic automakers were sailing into bankruptcy, due to the burdens of legacy costs and the ignorance of the rising competition from Asia. More importantly, he was doing this in the early 60s, when no one else was even close to seeing what was coming.
On a personal note, I met him and his wife more than a few times, and Jerry was a real class act. His knowledge of the industry put most people to shame, and he was always willing to talk cars, anywhere, anytime. He'll be missed by everyone who knew him.
