Rolling back the ODO? Is it allowed?

Considering my entire car is new. New motor, new suspension, new interior, aftermarket bodywork, new paint (Well, soon)... so do I have the right to roll the odo back from 140,000 miles to ZERO? If so, can it be done? I mean, if I can't, what's stopping me from dropping an Autometer speedo in there?!

Gimme some input!

Not entirely sure of the legality, but look at your title, it probably says something like "odometer disclosure exempt" being that your car is an `87 so it would probably be no big deal...

do you even have to ask that question? rolling back the odometer is a FEDERAL OFFENSE no matter what the reason or what state youre in.

I understand that. So can I Replace the Speedo? Its essentially a ground up restoration. I have no problem noting it on the title. Hmm

If you ever sell the car you have to disclose that the odometer is not original and the car is TMU or Total Mileage Unknown I personally wouldn't touch the odometer but just take note of when it was rebuilt. Dave

what does the odometer actually log, totals miles on the car as a whoole or just body/engine ?
Re: Rolling back the ODO? Is it allowed? (Kritter)

So then technically if I repair an odometer that stopped years ago I'm commiting a federal offense because it reads lower than the true mileage.
There are ways to do this. I know VW places somesort of sticker in the door jamb if the dealer replaces the Odometer.

It's not illeagal to repair it's only illeagal if you sell it and don't disclose that the mileage or cluster is not displaying the original engine miles. At the dealership when they repleace a cluster in a newer car they put a sticker inside the door jam that says TMU. my friend Lucaq here in vortex had this done to his passat that is why I know about it. You could do it for your own purposes (i.e you want to start fresh) but you'll have to tell the DMV at some point that your old one broke and that you replaced it. HOWEVER, then its going to be registered as TMU (true mileage unknown).

That sounds like a plan. I have come "connections" at the DMV, so it means I don't even have to wait in line!

Has anyone ever replaced the stock speedo/tach in the cluster with those Autommeter ones?

My odometer skipped 80k in the last 3 months(only the X digits roll up, whenever it feels like
, like this XX0000
). So next time I get a smog check am I going to tell the guy my car is TMU???

In a way, I agree with Tbird Pimpdaddy here. VWs are one of those cars where high mileage isn't as much of a problems as it would be on say a Chevrolet. While my original Jetta only had 118,000 miles on it when I bought it, my others have had closer to 200,000 on them, and have all run better than most cars with half the mileage on them. With the exception of a V6 Firebird I had a long time ago that went 180,000 before the motor blew, I've only been able to get 110,000-120,000 on a non-VW before needing to replace something big, like a motor.
Sure, I guess it would be nice to restart your odometer after doing a complete rebuild, but I would think that rebuild would have to be VERY complete (i.e. EVERY SINGLE PART new) to pull it off. Doesn't seem worth the trouble to me. In fact, when I've replaced, updated my gauges, I've made sure to roll up the mileage to match what the car has on it. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
