Shopping around for crossbars to mount to the factory rails. Owners manual says you can put 200 lbs. on the roof. Yakima racks at $155 have a limit of 125 lb. Thule racks at $190 is 165 lb. Not sure what the VW racks at $165 can hold. Anybody have an opinion on this one? I would use them for the occasional oversized item(s) that would not fit inside.

Depending on where your load is placed, you will get some inward flexing of the factory rails with over 100 or so lbs. The thule cross bars are a little stouter, more rigid than the yakima and will reduce this somewhat. You'll need the 415 footpack to mount them and you may want to trim the rails for asthetics.

The VW racks are rated at 200 lb. They are not made by Thule. They look more like Saris. They are nice and stout, probably a bit more rigid than either the Thule or Yakima; also shorter bars, and their accessories won't work with it very well, if at all. If all you are looking for is the cross rails and not ski, bike, kayak, etc. they're good. If you want lots of accessories, go with Yakima, Thule or Saris so that you can use them on another car.
