I have a new 2001 GTi, I have 1700 miles on it (1200 miles of it was a drive from Michigan to Florida) My question is, whenever I shift, the shift is not smooth at all. If it very "choppy". Is this to be expected with the A4's? I am used to the A3's, has something changed since then? Will it smooth out after time? This is my first NEW VW, so I dont know what to expect. TIA

I'd expect it to break in more. I don't think much has changed, It's still a cable shifter.

So there is a break in??? Like I said this is my first NEW VW, so I dont know what to expect. How long is the typical break in?? I cant stand the rough shifting.

The more you use it the faster it will break in. When sitting at stoplights row threw the gears. Not power shifting but normal rowing. If it persist for a long time take it to the dealer.
