Here's the Quote of the Week, from Mark Morford's "Morning Fix" column in the San Francisco Chronicle's SFGate.com:
Rugged And Manly Pathetic Dings
"The Ford Explorer, the world's top-selling SUV, suffered extensive bumper damage in low-speed crash tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said. The 2002 Explorer sustained $5,432 worth of damage in four tests conducted at a wimpy little 5 mph, earning the institute's lowest rating for bumper performance. Like the Explorer, the 2002 Jeep Liberty earned the lowest, "poor" rating after sustaining $5,667 in damage. In similar tests, nearly every SUV on the market was shown to be a gimmick-thick marketing ploy to give testosterone-impaired owners the false impression of rugged manliness when in fact they're wimpier than a Honda Civic and handle like tanks and roll incredibly easily and explode and kill people and are uglier than a Pacer and have less cargo room than your average station wagon and suck gas and pollute and damage roads and hog parking but aren't they all so cute with their little American flags on their antenna."

Well all the posuer SUV owners install front tubular brush guards so who cares

The hardcore guys build our own bumpers, or go with like the ARB front bumpers (almost heavy enough to need a spring upgrade)

Here's the latest from Mark Morford (today's Morning Fix column in SFGate):
**Oh Boy More Cheap SUVs**
Even with the economy in a recession, Americans attracted by free auto financing deals pushed their spending up by a record amount in October while their incomes were stagnant. The Commerce Department reported that personal spending rose by an all-time high of 2.9 percent in October, led by a record increase in purchases of autos and other durable goods. At the same time, personal incomes, reflecting the huge number of layoffs in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, showed no increase in October for the second straight month, the worst showing in more than seven years. "Screw the kids' college fund, there's zero percent financing on lumbering 3-ton 12-mpg Chevy Tahoes!" screamed Rick Zebykowski of some painfully drab and desperately lost outpost of quasi-civilization like Butte, Montana. "Support our troops! Buy a Toro Lawn-Master 3000!" http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2001/12/03/financial0838EST0025.DTL&nl=fix
